Transit mk7 starting problem

Postby Jamierambo » Tue Feb 09, 2016 6:06 pm

Hi I have a 58 plate 140 hp rwd 140k

I have had starting problems it will start and run for 2 to 3 seconds then cut out if you put it in 1st or reverse and try and start and let the clutch out it will start. This only happens a bit 1 or 2 times a month then would not start altogether it was fitted with a crank position sensor and a stop solenoid in the fuel pump and a egr valve a year ago and whent fine till last week till it would not start.

I have put a new stop solenoid in the high pressure pump and a pressure switch and and relief valve in the common rail old rail relief valve in one pice . I was told these are very common parts to replace first. It when Fine for a day but has started playing up again.

It has had 2 new big battery's on a split charge. The starter is a livelier for two new batters but still a little slow If you bump start you only have to go 5 ft and it runs but is you stop it then it will not fire on the key

when it is running it pulls really well and is really smooth .

I was thinking about a new starter and glow plugs next

Is there anything that it could be that I have missed

Thanks jamie

When I turn the key the starter runs maybe a bit slow for my liking and will start it for a few seconds then dies but if I bump it it goes straight away and runs fine. Are they having the same symptoms or are they getting nothing at all from the starter ?

Thanks for any help it's annoying me now !!

Have a look on mk6/7 third gen transit and search ignition switch there are a few that are similar to your problem the switch is about £10-£15 so not very expensive my neighbour has a mk7 that kept turning off so he went to ford they fitted the switch for £40.

Ok thanks will look in to that.
When you said about the Ignition Switch the radio has been going on and off on its own but display and time still displayed all the time witch someone else post said about this too.

Is there any way of bypassing/ testing it with a power probe at the ignition?

Hi got a new ignition switch from Ford but still not working has not made any difference at all

What I can't understand if you bump start it it will go all day but won't start on the key at all even though it will turn the starter motor over ??

Bump starting your tranny is not a good idea...can cause the cam timing chain to jump teeth, there's info here about it here from someone who knows:

Have you changed the fuel filter lately?? Could be a lazy starter too...might not have quite enough to spin it over fast enough to catch properly. Pop the starter out to see if there's any crud in there... Also give the crank sensor a a good clean.

Ok will take the starter off and look for gunk/ dust
The starter is a little slower than my brothers transit
It dose run for a second or two with the key but then dies.
Then look at sensors if that brings no joy

Today as well as changing the ignition switch I have taken all the battery leads and cleaned the joint they where pretty good to be fair.

I will see how it goes and let you boys know how I get on

Thanks

Yes the oil type is 5w30 Morris's oil it's the same as all the transits at work use and it's always had that oil.

The intermittent starting has been on the key has been going on for about a year but always did start after 4 to 5 try's but now will only bump and I know it's not recommended .

Can you borrow your brothers starter motor and try it on your van could be yours is on its way out, if it starts no problem with the borrowed one then your starter had it.

Hi both the battery's are new this week both 110 ah 800 cc amp

I had the crank sensor out to day and it was spotless no dust or sworf on it. I did mark it so the air gap was the same when put back in.

I could try his starter it's just a job to have both vans in the same places!
I should have time tomorrow to take the starter off and have a look if it's gunked up if it is I have see new bosh starter on eBay for £100 but will if the ford dealer in about the same will just get one

It's a pain not being mobile as there is so much out on site that needs doing !!
