2004 tipper Diff leaking

Postby dougied » Wed Apr 20, 2016 10:09 am

Hi Guys sure this has been covered somewhere so point me in the right direction moderator please or someone please advise me

My tipper diff has a slight leak and obviously needs re sealing, questions are :-
1-Am I right in thinking this tipper does not need a gasket just the sealer ?
2-Do I have to put in new oil or can I put back the original (its only done 85,000 miles from new)?
3- If I use sealer/gasket sealer can I use the black stuff normally used for sealing windscreens, bodypanels etc ?
4- Torque settings ( I don't have a manual ).
5-Tools required

sorry meant to ask I take it there,s a drain plug below and a filler at the top? Same as a gearbox?

Thanks a lot guys for any help and sorry to the moderators again if I have jumped the gun I just cant find a topic on my specific model

thx Dougie

Yes, drain it, clean up plugs and reuse, is it a 10 bolt cover? if so....................http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-DIFF-GAS ... SwLmVXDUvU Use a smear of Black/red RTV silicone on each side of gasket after you clean the mating surfaces. I'd put new oil in just to be sure, think it's quite thick 75w140 or something like that. Haynes will tell ya 2.3 litres i think. Good luck mate

Hi Davcotts

my diff has 12 bolts so would imagine botht the same eh, Its just I heard not all diffs have a transit that's why I asked. Do you know are these diffs limited slip it depends on the oil I was told ? Euro car parts sells limited slip diff oil.

Limited slip diff in a Transit???....bwahahaha   ...not likely.

A good quality oil will suffice.

LSD units are universal in some ways, all you need to know is, how big your crownwheel is (in inches because these are american) how many bolts the crownwheel has and how many splines the driveshafts have, oh and of course the ratio. But you can put a LSD in a tranny, or any other RWD vehicle . And LSD oil has conditioner for the clutch plates within the unit, you will cook standard paper type discs if you leave it out. But new LSD's use carbon discs and i would imagine that this uses a different method. Oh and dont get a worm drive LSD (quaife ect), they make more noise than the engine.

Hi Guys

Finally got around to doing my leaky Diff today. Never knew there wasn,t a Drain plug !! Anyway got out my Oil drainer tray,Cleaned off all around the diff took it off and then cleaned both the surface of the diff and the Diff cover. Cleaned out the remaining oil in the bottom of the diff that never drained out with a clean dry cloth Cleaned the Gasket (both sides) and wiped all surfaces over with a degreaser then dried. Applied some Black silicone to both surfaces of the Gasket re installed and tightened (not all the way tight) Left it half an hour then tightened it fully then filled with oil about 2.6 litres and took her 20 miles down the road. No leaks well happy !
One point to make though, when I emptied out the oil draining tray into a gallon tin there was only 800ml of oil so my Diff was very very low any way so leak must have been there longer than I expected so good job I did this eh !!

Thanks for any help given in doing this job lads especially the advice for the Diff Oil 75w- :D 140 .

My local motor factors (ex), has argued till blue in the face that it takes 75w90. I told him that it's people like him responsible for all those whiny transit diffs. It's defo 75w140, think even haynes can confirm this.

Castrol have a good webpage to verify what oils for engine/gearbox/diff
http://applications.castrol.com/oilsele ... b/c/search

Its hard getting any sense out of ford even with so many variations at the best of times. I'm in the process of checking a potential whiny diff on mine (2002 T125-350L twin wheel RWD chassis cab )Axle is - Type 53 Rear Axle 5720lb(2600 Kg) Axle Ratio 4.63. Interesting castrol state the oil is suitable for both LSD and standard diffs, which sort of eliminates another problem do I have an LSD or not. If you do the oil type is usally quite critical. I did have my diff topped up a while back and I am wondering if maybe they just stuck in plain diff oil and its now causing the whine. I shall drain it and start again I think.
CASTROL STATES
Syntrax Limited Slip 75W-140
Differential, rear
Fully synthetic axle oil. BMW approved for limited slip differentials GL-5 75W-140. Also suitable for non-limited slip differentials.
