clutch disengaging at speed (Mk7 2.2)

Postby MatteH » Thu May 05, 2016 7:43 am

When driving along at motorway speeds (60-70mph) my mk7 2.2 (85), the clutch disengages and starts to slip, pumping the pedal restores drive. Surely the clutch plate springs should keep the friction plate
in contact with the flywheel?

Confused!? :?

Is your pedal returning fully, could be that your pedal is not getting far enough up which in turn blocks the port in the master cyl dumping the fluid back into the reservoir if you have to pump it maybe that if your lifting foot hard off the pedal the cyl is returning hard enough to allow the system to dump properly. A broken return spring within the master cly can also cause the same symptoms

I have checked most of the obvious like fluid level, looked for leaks (none), checked the pipes, hoses and MC etc.
I will have a look at the pedal, I *think* it may not return fully which may well be the return spring as you have suggested. It has got
stuck at about 9/10ths of travel recently, and then sprung fully up once or twice, so you may well be on the money.

It just seems odd that hydraulic pressure is somehow lifting the clutch plate, as if I'm depressing the pedal?!

Will take a look in a bit, thanks.

I've been unable to confirm this is fixed as now my van won't start after suddenly dying 10 miles from home

Im having the exact same issue here with my Mk7 2.2 FWD.

Clutch just lets go, and the pedal goes down about half way. If you lift the pedal up with your foot, and pump it a little, everything is back to normal. No exact frequency for it, or driving style causes it.

Any advice please....

Managed to sort it, I bled all four brake calipers and the clutch using a pressure bleeder after a full brake overhaul i.e. a total fluid change.

Bizarre to think why this occurred, I can only assume the trapped air expands and depresses the release bearing? :?

Matt, have you had any problems since bleeding the hydraulic system ? How do you bleed the clutch cylinder ?
