Removing turbo / manifold in bay mk6

Postby trilliouk » Sat Jun 25, 2016 11:24 am

My van blew smoke and lost power on motorway. Had turbo looked at by friend and its apparent that the turbo is finished.

Im happy to order a replacement but is it possible to remove the turbo and manifold on the mk6 with the engine still in the bay, the position makes it look real hard, any advice would be appreciated.

im assuming its just a case of removing the 8 manifold retaining bolts after disconnecting all hoses and pipes, or is there anything else i will be needing to prepared to remove?

Turbo is a cartridge type on the Mk6.

Remove inlet hoses, remove oil lines, undo band clamp, and there you have it.

Thank you guys. Turbo has been removed independently of manifold fairly easily.

If there are any other van owners as useless as me out there i would suggest:

1: remove all hoses,

2: remove banjo from top of turbo (the one with the very thin metal pipe, its attached to a flexi-pipe further down so can be moved around without breaking)

3: the oil return pipe (long metal pipe at base of turbo) runs to the bottom of engine, held in place by a bolt and c-clip is easier to remove down there than it is to contort your hands to take it off at the turbo.

4: then remove the band clamp and turbo slides right out.

I ordered a turbo cartridge from a local supplier for around £60, came complete with new rubber seal. super easy to rebuild.

UNFORTUNATELY after reinstalling the the turbo and refilling the oil, the damage had already been done to the engine after it had gone run-away. The engine seized shortly after being run. So be sure that your engine is still sound if this run-away problem has been part of the breakdown.

Thanks for the advice guys.
