Sounds like a spitfire when engine accelorating

Postby Bernskibeat » Sun Jul 17, 2016 7:48 pm

Hi all! I own a 54 plate 85 280 and it's all good on tickover but when I drive it it's fine when sat at a constant speed but when you accelerate and put the engine under load it sounds like a spitfire lol like at tappety ticking noise but stops as soon as you back off the throttle. Any ideas what it could be. There is no smoke or oil loss or even any power loss just a crazy noise

Have a look for a split or crack in the pipe that runs round the engine, from the EGR valve to the turbo

Also check that the turbo shaft and blades have no play in them. N

+1 on this, I've just bought one today from ford for £35ish as the flexi had split, spent a week repeatedly looking at manifold/exhaust trying to find where it was blowing from!! :?

I'm curious, on a MK6, would it be ok to just remove the pipe altogether and blank the EGR & the exhaust manifold off where it joins the pipe?

Hi Altransit, Great! Did you notice any reduction in engine noise in the cab (the main reason i'd like to remove it)? I reckon since it's still attached to the exhaust manifold, some noise must be fed into the pipe, which is right behind the bulkhead.

It was quieter, but only because the pipe was split

It was definitely smoother and quicker, and the flat spot that I had, just disappeared 8) 8)
