Running an 03 plate on vegetable oil

Postby Tom Cobbles » Wed Jul 27, 2016 5:18 pm

Hi there

I have an 03 plate ford transit van
It is the modern type engine Direct injection
I don't know much about the engine because there is nothing written on the engine apart from a load of plastic junk boxes

Everyone I have spoken to says that this engine will not not not run on cooking oil

I wanted to ask you lot if this is true or not or can it be mixed down with petrol and at what ratio?

Thanks

Pretty sure its been covered on here before but no it won't. it will run for a short while then kill all the electrics on the pump. if you go mtdi conversion then i do believe you could then run on veg oil.

If it's an '03 model...it'll more than likely be a TDDi.

I dont know what engine it is and dont know what TDCI and TDDI is

Why the electronics? and what is a MTDI?

TDDi = Turbo Diesel Direct Injection (has electronic control of pump but non-electronic injectors)
TDCi = Turbo Diesel Common Rail injection (has electronic control and electronic injectors)
MTDi - Manual Turbo Direct injection (manual control via cable etc...)

As usual...I stand corrected.

I have had a look inside my engine bay and there are no electronics on the injectors
The injector pump which is hidden under the air intake box which looks like if you want to remove it you need to take the radiator and front panel out.
I see no wiring loom near the injector pump, there is no throttle cable it is all electronic so I guess the pump is electronic too.
So I am guessing this is a TDDi engine

Are these electronic injector pumps powered by 12 volt or driven off of the cam?

I just can not understand why it would kill the electronics and not the pump its self. how do you convert it to mtdi?

Even if the pump did pack in it could have been on its way out any way you would never know

I was on a biodiesel vegetable making forum
And I was told the exact same thing about damaging the electronics of the injector pump
This is what was quoted from the forum so you can make your own mind up, infact I am pretty sure the google search term should bring you straight to the web page with out violating any cyber laws

If it is the earlier TDDI (as opposed to the TDCI) I have known a few people run these successfully on veg.

In the early days there were fears of the pumps being too delicate but it seems to be the pump's electronics that are the delicate bit and the pump itself is very similar to the older DI unit.

In fact, there is a guy on the Transit forum who makes a kit to fit a re-engineered version of the older DI pump to the later engines but it is around £650

As with all DI engines, the advice is twin tank it

The tdci engine was first introduced in mid 2002,

In a mk6 it was a 125ps fwd 2.0L fifa engine fitted from September 2002, the fuel system is a Delphi common rail system and the early tdci's had a separate injector control module to the pcm.

As you already know Lucifer himself designed that fuel system and some say he left a little bit of his evil spirit in each one .

Where are you getting your veg oil from, if its the supermarket then its not much cheaper than the price of diesel per litre. N

I thought the 125ps tdci come out around 2005.

Any way.

Cooking oil isn't good for any diesel engine because it's too think.

I ran my old escort van on 50/50 oil and diesel and it blew the pump in the end. Didn't like starting in the cold either.
