the only theory i have is lack of oil/low oil pressure due to the poor desgin of the oil pump

This making sway more to getting rid what happened to hassle free motoring. God knows what the inside of mine looks like ..
Think I'll try the pcm again and have a serious think on whether or not to get rid :?

Was thinking of fitting a brand new water pump to this engine.

But then bagged this complete assembly from Ebay.
Power steering pump with water pump. Removed from a 2014 Transit Custom - Bargain price of £42  8) :P

Yes it's the same fitted to mk7 2.2

Please don't forget to take the old pump apart

Oil pumps fitted to mk7's are the same used on Transit mk6 - Part no 1S7Q-6600-ROZEA
Stripped down old oil pump today. Here is the outcome.

Black arrow is oil flow path

Image

Image

Gear shows signs of wear on teeth.

Image

Pump housing has excessive wear & scoring.

Image

Relief valve worn on one side.

Image

Relief valve bore also worn & pitted.

Conclusion

No pump specs available - Unable to determine manufacturing defect within pump itself

Excessive wear due to ether: -

Not serviced when due.
Wrong grade / type of oil used
Cheap/ poor quality oil used.
Oil contamination - diesel/coolant.
High mileage (Not the case for this engine)

Many thx Paul,
can you determine if there is any wear on the gear shaft/bearings and associated housing bearings?
One image seems to show a simple aluminium bearing for one shaft and the other shaft having some
sort of bearing insert.

Looks a bit like its been pumping some sort of solids for a while

Glad I change my oil every 10K

There are no separate bearings. Gearhshafts rely on oil pressure just like camshafts do.
There is some wear present on them. Without pump specs can't say if excessive or not.
Pump manufacturer is Pierburg.

Same here. I've used old ones.

There's nothing in Ford specs regarding replacement of mains & BE bearing cap bolts.
Although Ford specs to state....

Discard & fit new -

Cylinder head bolts.
Rear crankshaft seal bolts.
Valve cover studs.
Crankshaft pulley bolts can only be used 3 times, After which fit new ones.
Injector clamp bolts
