different alternators

Postby scas » Wed Sep 21, 2016 9:14 pm

i have a 04 mk6 2.4 115,she wouldnt start the other day and again yesterday- i threw a new battery in it and today she wouldnt start- no battery power. yes i know 2 seconds with a multimeter would have told me the battery was fine. i have another transit with a dead engine for spares, same year, same van. i took the alternator off the dead one and stuck it on the present one and it still was not charging- 11.8 volts when running. then changed the big fusey things in the engine fuse box, the 5amp fuse- maybe f18 and the relay in the internal fuse box- not charging.
when i changed the alternator from the dead van i noticed it was different with the same connector on it but my present van has 2 wires coming from it into the loom and dead van has 3. so would this men dead van alternator wont work on present van .
electrics wouldnt be my thing

Have you checked all the earth points, also try putting the multimetre closer to alternator just incase you have a broken wire.

Do you give the engine rev to kick the alternator in before testing.

First things first, voltage on battery when its not running and voltage on battery when it is running?

Would of thought a kaput alternator would throw up the battery warning light on dash :?:

Could be something putting a load on battery when van is not running, like leaving your lights on (obviously not that but thats the idea)

problem solved-it was my own stupidity  - id taken off the starter to clean it inside and on sticking it back on i put the wire with 2 wires on it onto the little bolt and fried the wire from the alternator to the starter down near the starter, stuck engine loom from spare van on and the old b*itch is charging fine now.
many thanks to member APH for the direction of where to look, id still be scratching my head without him

Good man....you may well be the author of your own woe, but you've got enough spunk to admit it. 8)
