Empty filter

Postby ezimoto » Sun Oct 23, 2016 1:30 pm

Hi guys
2.4 TDDI
Having a problem with van breaking down, when it does the filter is empty. Fill filter and prime then she runs fine.
Replaced filter housing and filter with new and she has run fine for a few weeks but now has broken down again with empty filter.
Don't have bulb primer with correct fittings but have ordered kit which should be here in few days,
Managed to fit clear pipe and feed from fuel can which pulls fuel through with no bubbles however filter is still emptying. Put clear pipe on return from filter and has no bubbles however it seems to return more fuel than it takes which I assume is why filter is emptying.
Any ideas or do I have to wait until the priming kit arrives?
Thanks in advance, I'm a bike man so diesel knowledge is a bit limited.

like you im not a diesel man, but going on your description, at a guess, i would be looking at the pump in the tank not supplying enough fuel

No tank pump fitted on MK 6 tddi

Check all connections are good and tight and not allowing air to be drawn in

Thanks for replies.
All connectors "seem" tight although without being able to pressurise or vacuum test it's not really possible to be sure, there are no actual leaks. Tried using spray around connectors etc and no sign of anything being sucked in.
Maybe I need to be patient and wait for kit to arrive, bit puzzled how it seems to return more fuel than it is fed but I'm probably just being dense!
Thanks again

Sounds to me you have a air leak making the fuel run back to the tank

No idea mate. Better still try to fix it proper in case something else worse breaks as a result?
