rear window wash

Postby ray1965 » Tue Oct 25, 2016 10:08 pm

hi Guys
just bought an ex rac mk6 panel van, the van has a rear tailgate, as it has the quick deploy trailer fitted, the rear windscreen wiper was removed when they fitted the stripes to the window
im just having some welding done, and one of the areas is the near side inner sill, right at the front corner where the mud flap is, the hole was about 100mm x 600mm, so you could see in it, it looked empty and the outer sill in good order
having that the hole is now plated, there is a water leak from that spot welded seam, and its not stopped after 6 hours of dripping from 3 places and putting a large puddle on the floor

washer bottle looks tike the rear wash has been blanked off at the bottle/pump

now obviously the welding has melted a pipe/hose, but does the rear washer pipe run thru the inner sill, or does something else carry water thru it

bearing in mind nothing could be seen in there prior to welding, and the water is not stagnant, or have anti freeze, its just plain water

The rear wash wipe water pipes run across the top inside the van (up the side of the screen and above the doors) well mine did anyway. N

Mine goes the same from the front over the roof and down, on some I'm sure there's a bottle in the back n/s for rear wash wipe, maybe minibuses only tho?

Ahhh, now this has got me thinking.
I have had a water drip from my passenger side front wheelarch, at the bottom seam in front of the "A" post, it's never stopped since I bought the van 2 months ago and have not been able to figure it out.
However, I went to use the front screen washers last week and they were low/empty, I never really gave it any thought till I read this.
I wonder if that's where my water leak is coming from, a hole in the washer pipe.
The washers work fine, so it could only be a pinhole and I think the van has possibly had a new wing or repair at some point.

Easy to check, you can remove the black plastic cover that goes over the washer bottle it's only 1x8mm bolt or screw, the single pipe should just run straight up into the engine bay

problem solved

the blame actually lies with a windscreen fitter, just prior to purchasing the van, it had a new screen fitted, the fitter left out the seal at the top of the screen and broke every clip and clip holder the holds the side trim in place, so he used windscreen sealant to glue it back, as the seal was missing and no clips on the trim, instead of the water running down the screen, it was going behind the side trim and being diverted by the sealant into the now redundant clip holes, then into the A post, running inside the arch to the sill, but there was obviously a blockage that the welding and of hammering disturbed, and thus it then flooded out

The top windscreen trim was deleted by Ford in about 2004.
It traps water and rots the top edge.
If you see one on a later van it's usually hiding the mess made by a window fitter

lol

ive only met 2 windscreen fitters that do a nice job, and thats on old classics where they are charging big money

most of them are responsible for the rust around a window

If you want them to fit a windscreen correctly stand there and watch the bugger fit it. N
