Does not matter in the scheme of things just good to get advise or confirmation sometimes :D It seems the Transit was bomb proof for the first 200,000km but since then it is more timebomb sad as it seems it might be time to say goodbye but as a mate said a complete mechanical rebuild would be under 25K and to upgrade to a new motorhome is 130K ,Although the mechanicals seem fine just the electric side is p###ing me off

Ok just to update those who have helped The fusible link has been restored now runs a real fuse  seems I in my uneducated chase for a solution swapped the stuffed glow plug relay with the ignition one and this is when the fusible link went up , the glow plugs were the initial problem as they have a dead short hence the drain when trying to start  the rest is history re doing the starter was a complete waste of money and effort  so now it is glow plug renewal time because we have a trip on to Canberra during winter
A side issue is because I refitted the stuffed GP relay into the ignition spot this meant no indicators wipers or A/C it also effected the fueling system because it was smoking like a coal fired power plant once the new relay was replaced and the GP one left out the fusible link no longer arced up and everything worked 8)
I have ordered a new set of glowplugs also a set of inlet manifold rings and an EGR gasket anything further I need ? I have been told the GP can be a bitch to remove and it is a softly softly job or it will end in tears ? and to top it off the solenoid on the starter has fried so that whole issue is away again

I have no glow plugs running in my van due to the 'it will end in tears' (1 snapped in the head) so I believe lots of wd40 or your equivalent and getting the engine warmed up before starting the job helps. N

Thanks for the tip have heard this
2 questions how hard is it to start when cold ? coldest we are likely to experience is 0-3deg
Why not do as a mate tells me he did he had 2 that would not budge so isolated then so they were off grid so to speak and the other 2 still work which seems to make him happy ?

The vans been starting great with temperature down to 1, it was -2.5 and frozen the other day and it needed abit of easy start to fire up, I only have trouble due to the low fuel rail pressure which will be fixed this year.

I have ran the van without glow plugs for the last 3 years, I could run on 3 glow plugs and isolate no1 cylinder might try that :D N

That's an expensive can of start ya barsteward  Think I paid £80 for 4 glow plugs what's that about 120 aus, so what you've been charged is quite reasonable considering the price for some parts in your sunnier climate. N

Glow plugs were KLG and $26 each the inlet gaskets $5 each so $40 I was quoted more for 1 at Ford than 8 at Mick Miles http://www.fordtransitparts.com.au/

I have to get the inlet gaskets for mine along with everything else on the to do list, timing chain kit, service kit, brakes, wheel bearing, injectors, fuel pump the list goes on, it would be cheaper to buy a new van but I love my van even though it is a tdci and wants to kill me  N

This thing is driving me crazy the auto elec who did all the tests and sorted everything said the starter is US or to be exact the solenoid was so being a brand new Bosch unit I contacted the supplier and they said remove it and we will send it away to be tested for warranty ( 3 weeks old ) removed it , getting good at it now  , took it to the auto elec shop for a bench test all good would not fail  in the car sometimes yes sometimes no even with direct current sometimes no  Oh well it is off to the supplier who will send it away for testing and/or exchange got me beat
