Exhaust smoke and suspected turbo problems

Postby Jamesrtoneil » Wed Dec 14, 2016 2:24 pm

Hey there,

I'm new to the Transit world so please bear with me.
I've been getting some black smoke from my exhaust which i suspect is from my turbo, but not too sure.
Any help/advice would be great. Here's the break down...

-at low revs/constant engine pressure (cruising) there isn't any smoke
-When accelerating, at around 2000rpm there is often a slight delay of power then a puff of black smoke from the exhaust. This especially happens when changing gear into this rpm range.
-when going up steep hills there is more smoke and what i can only describe as power hesitation/slight stuttering from the van.
-in any gear at any speed, if i floor it i get the smoke coming out.

Again, i'm not too mechanically minded but eager to learn to be able to fix these things myself.

Thanks in advance.

Black smoke is usually over fuelling, a good service and clean the egr and air intake may help. N

Thanks nedforceone.
I've just had an extensive service, which i hoped would sort it out. I didn't even have any advisories from the service too! The problem still continued though.

I would be tempted to clean out the egr valve as it maybe gunked up also the air intake from egr to engine will be full of gunk.
if you suspect its the turbo whip the intake pipe off and have a look for any thing odd, excess oil, etc and feel the for any movement in the turbo. N

Black smoke is a fueling issue as Ned says.

Who did the service ?

You need codes read, even then there might be no faults stored.

From what you describe it's most likely that it is just badly tuned on the factory settings.
VanTuner can sort it out.

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

Thank you for the responses.
I had it serviced at a lifestyle ford garage.
I'll look into the egr valve/air intake for gunk as well as inspecting the turbo intake pipe and turbo. gonna read up on these too.
will update soon.
Cheers

I had black smoke and no power below 2k.

I thought the turbo seals had gone, as there was a little bit of oil where it connects to the intake.

Replaced the turbo and all the feed pipes, oil strainer etc. and still had the same problem.

Turned out to be the EGR, even though I had just replaced it 7 months earlier.

There is a turbo test on IDS and if you do suspect the egr, get the uprated one.

My camper does go like stink now, with the new turbo!

Normally if the turbo seals go, you'll see blue-ish smoke....and it will fill the intercooler with engine oil...and eventually the engine may "runaway" and destroy itself on it's own oil.

As the others have mentioned, the EGR is more likely the culprit....

So, I've had a friend at a local garage take a look at my van, focusing on the EGR.
computer diagnostics came back with an EGR error, however, instead of replacing/remove and clean, he ran some system cleaners through my van as well as updated the vans electronics for it to re-learn the EGR valve etc...
The van has now stopped smoking and generally feels a lot tighter and responsive when driving.
Thank you everyone for pointing me in the right direction. Much appreciated!

The EGR "will" fail again sooner or later if you've not done any physical work to it, the EGR is an "air" valve, no fuel goes through it, they get full of exhaust crud and spooge...best to give it a good old fashioned cleaning or replace it. There's no EGR learning procedure that I'm aware of.... Maybe he just did the injector and pilot learns and PCM update..?? Time will tell...

A result anyway..!

Thank you again for everyone's advice.
I replaced the EGR valve a few months back and all problems were solved.
The van's been driving so much smoother with very minimal smoke if none at all.

Thank you again!
Cheers,
