Oil filter housing & sump

Postby WTS18 » Wed Feb 15, 2017 9:38 am

I've had my MK7 Transit for over a year now and gone from 127000 miles to 153000 miles in that time. I have serviced it myself during that time with no issues at all. Recently, I decided It was to cold to get underneath so decided to get a local chain garage to service for me. All went well except that the technician could not move the oil filter housing and said it was too tight and could'nt move it without damage and that the sump drain threads had worn and could not do up the plug tight enough. I never had any issues with these parts before and while I did'nt use a torque wrench on either, I know they were not overtightened.
Is this issue common to Transits?
I have done some research and a new filter housing is cheap enough as is a new standard sump. I have also seen a high capacity sump which holds more oil and claims to give smoother running, more mpg etc. Is this a worthwhile upgrade?
Any advice is appreciated.
It's a 2007 2.4 RWD flatbed by the way
Cheers in advance

Wasn't Kwik fit by any chance ?

Sound to me like they have stripped the thread on the sump, can you not re-cut the thread?

No, not them. Although I am quite handy with the spanners, I don't have the facilities to recut threads. I do quite like the idea of the large capacity sump. I do a lot of miles with a good load on board (car transporter) so this appeals. Does anyone have any experience of these?

Right, I've ordered the oil filter housing and gone for a genuine Ford part. I will wait and see about the sump. I will have to drain the oil again to fit the new housing so I may wait a while before I worry about the sump. I'm going to have to change the oil to do either job so it seems a waste to drain brand new oil, I might as well get a few miles out of it.

So I don't have to drain the oil to replace the housing then?
Sounds good to me

Right, all sorted. I managed to get the old housing off in around 30 seconds. Okay, the nut had rounded so a socket didn't work but a chain wrench soon shifted it. It wasn't tight at all and was very easy to do. I wonder that the "technician" didn't think to use a different method. I will stick to doing it myself again.

Always pays to diy. I took a van into a garage for a clutch change as too wet outside to diy. week later no van or clutch they couldn't bleed it, had to help remove gearbox and refit with the mechanic.
