Standard ones are 13mm hex head, which makes them M8, IIRC. 30mm should be long enough

Is there any engineering supply company's near you? I have found them very useful in the past and sell nuts n bots and stuff in singles, I got a nut with the nylon lock stuff in for a ball joint for a whopping 65p from one near me. Just a thought. N

You're right, I'm thinking of the base to the floor bolts (I think). They're still M8 though :)

Ive used Accu.co.uk for odd bolts. Good range and you can buy small quantities.

Stainless is harder than mild steel, but brittle. This is a safety thing and if high tensile steel was originally speced I think you should stick to that.

Stainless is not harder than Mild Steel as such, just more difficult to machine for most people.

Unless it is a structural grade/suitably heat treated, it is about as strong as the monkey metal bolts you can get in DIY stores etc. A4 grade is about as strong as a 'normal' steel bolt.

The worrying thing with Stainless is a issue known as rupture fracture toughness, where a sudden overload situation can lead to complete failure rather than a bit of distortion as with steel.

Only good thing with it is that in most situations it doesn't corrode, the big but here is that it will accelerate corrosion in more volatile metals i.e. the cheapo stuff Ford made Transits out of.
