side loading door problem

mk6 lwb semi hi - exterior handle lever broken, both cables seem ok, but interior handle wont open door, tried pulling cable at broken handle end and something clicks at lock end, but door wont open, i dont have the black knob at lock end, but can turn the yellow bit with slot to positions pictured, - not sure how to proceed - locks seem to cycle on fob, but cant get the side door open from inside- the interior handle is still attached to its cable but wont open door ? Is it supposed to be possible to open the door just be turning the yellow bit on the lock end (where the black knob slots in)? or does it always involve one of the cables to get the door open? A bit stuck, i have tried searching the forum, but the old threads didn' throw up an obvious answer as to how to proceed - I know I need to order a new exterior handle, but how to open the door, why wont it work when i pull the cable manually?
