Low power high noise

Postby Mu0chn » Thu Mar 23, 2017 10:45 pm

Hi. I have a 2001 280 2.0L Duratorq DI (75PS)
It is very noisy, diesel knock. Starts fine but hunts if left on tick over till it starts to warm up a bit.
No rev counter so can't give figures but when I take off it seems to pull but has a very short and when past it is very slow to reach full revs.
When the weather is fine and dry as it gets to the end of the power band the heater plug light starts to flash and then there is a drop in power. if it is foggy or raining this does not happen but there is not much of an improvement in performance.
When the light does come on and I come to a down hill bit of road I turn the ignition off and back on and it is ok again.
I would like to get an OBD reader but the ones I have seen all seem to be for Diesels from 2004, maybe someone can point me in the right direction for something suitable.
My only experience with diesels is a 1994 2.8 TD that I had and sometimes the waste gate actuator would play up and I fitted an EGR blanking plate.
I learnt my trade at a BL garage between 1975 and 1981 and have been out of it ever since.
All help will be gratefully received.

Could well be the timing solenoid has failed but you need the codes read.
Search ebay for the F-super code reader, mk6 transits aren't fully obd2 compliant but the F-super will read them with the pc based formidable software that comes with them.

P0149 and P1564 are classic signs of timing solenoid failure, but before you jump in and buy a solenoid have a go at retarding the pump timing.
Take the circular cover off the timing chain case, loosen the 4 bolts on the sprocket (10mm socket) and turn the big nut (22 or 24mm) anti clockwise roughly 10 degrees. Re tighten the 4 bolts, pop the cover back on, clear the codes and go for a spin.
On the odd occasion this can sort it, if not it's time to get the solenoid replaced.

Hi Crankshaft. Thanks for the info. I have not tried it yet but maybe next week. As I understand it the solenoid can be hard to replace so hopefully adjusting the timing will do it.
I also have a Hijet but the wipers have stopped working so I cannot use it if I have a problem with the Transit.
Having reread your reply it will be easier than I thought to do it. I missed the bit about the circular cover and thought the whole cover had to come off

Hi there Crankshaft I've got a mk6 2.4 rwd 350 90psi. I've had this power loss problem for a long time now. I know its the timing solinoide using my super F reader. Never had and issue with van running on power loss its been all over the country with this problem But never gives up on me. This all happened after the fuel pump was replaced and starter motor. Do you think the timing could be ever so slightly out after the pump was done on it. I have noticed if I pull over turn engine off and on again the power kicks back in but when I break its back to power loss again. Any help will do cheers

Finally did it. Must oh had some work done before because the cover had been covered in sealer. Had a bit of trouble getting it off and found that it was broken so had to order a new one. Made the adjustment, not sure if it was enough but now it is a bit quieter and will rev a bit higher. The heater plug light has not come on like it did before.
Thanks Crankshaft I think the van will last till I can afford to get something else, the speed limit is 35 mph so it is not getting too much of a hard time.
