confused

Postby ray1965 » Fri Mar 24, 2017 7:47 am

hi Guys
need a little help here, i think going by the threads on here, my 2 litre transit has a timing solenoid issue, theres a lot of diesel knock cold, it gets better warm but still a tad too noisy, and its burning a little more fuel than normal, the pump was taken fromm a 150k van just over a year ago, with the original pump considerably over dieseling, pumping black smoke out

so looking to get a new timing solenoid, i went to the stealers, they said theres 2 types, one used std bolts and is about £200, the other uses torx and is £700, feck i thought if its the later i can buy a new pump, so looking on flea bay, ive come up with the following, however, the first dosnt seem to have bolts, but a collar nut, the pump on the van has the collar nut on the solenoid on the end, as does the one ive just taken from a scap van, but its not described as a timing solenoid, its called a fuel metering solenoid, or are they one and the same hing

but am i looking at the right parts, pls advise

theres very few on flea bay, and the bolted one dosnt state bolt type, is there a different one

its a 2 litre with VP30 pump

P.S
theres no where on either pump to fit the 3 bolt solenoid on or remove one with 3 bolts

looking on flea bay all the solenoids on the end seem to be collar nutted, and not blt types, so what are these sellers selling, as its a generic ipc drawing

its the part that sits in the middle of the pipe unions

The timing solenoid (second ebay link, 199.99, bolt on type) is the one that gives diesel knock and lack of power and is the part you'll need. It fits just below the outlet pipes on the pump.

The metering solenoid (first ebay link £179.95, threaded collar type), is the part that will stop the van from starting altogether and fits to the pump between the outlet pipes.

Here is my vp30 pump upside down In the vice, here you can see both solenoids, the faulty timing solenoid is at the top with the 2 torx screws removed.

I bought my solenoid direct from the local ford dealer, genuine part, complete with everything needed to fit it for £180, supplied same day.

Be aware that the plug fitted to the part cannot be used, the original part wires have to be cut near the solenoid, the new part plug cut off and the old and new wires spliced together with the supplied crimp connectors, then the red plastic insulation on the connectors needs to be heated so it shrinks onto the wires to seal the connection from water.

The other thing to check before splashing out on solenoids, is the pump timing.
It's very common for pumps to be fitted without using the proper timing pin kit, the result often gives the same symptoms as a dead timing solenoid.
I replaced the solenoid on mine because it was knocking like an old tractor and wouldn't pull above 50mph, I found the pump timing was a good way out and am convinced that this was the actual fault.

No worries if you could still let me know that would be great. Am on holiday next week so it will be a couple of weeks before I look at getting it sorted myself. Cheers

not yet, typical transit fashion, the tin worm has taken over, and all ive had the chance to do is take the dam thing further and further apart to clean up rot for welding after welding, bearing in mind in doing this in my spare time

its gotta be done, but it will probably be the last thing now, as I'm going to sub it out

finally got it back on the road, wasn't the solenoid making the noise, it was the injectors, one brand new set later and problem sorted

don't ask me how injectors make it knock like that as I havnt a clue, but they've certainly cured it for the interim anyway

also cured a slightly smoky start while it was there
