2.4 New Chain , Cam and rockers

Postby blower » Sun Mar 26, 2017 5:54 pm

Problems Problems ... Sent to try us

Something went bang ,so had to get recovered home as it would not start back up

Ive just had the front & top off the Engine to find that the timing chain tensioner is at the end , So going to order a Timing kit from Fords , but no rattle

The real problem was that the Cam had spun the front lobe on the EX side , and also got a broken rocker & carrier ladder on the same 1

INLET side of Cam looks fine , as do the rest of the EX side rockers

So , is it wise to change both cams , & all rockers ? , Anybody got away with just a Cam in the past ?

Ive seen that TPUK do most of the stuff im going to need to rebuild this engine , So again , is it wise to use Non Gen parts

The van is used hard , and although its only done 70K ,and serviced well , its had a hard life

Any input appreciated :D

Compression Pressure test

I had read that 380 to 420 could or should be expected , dependant of model

I had 270 t0 310 , Van ran fine beforehand ,

only 67K as well but fitted with a PTO system .... so maybe 167K

You're better off buying a new rocker ladder (comes with hydraulics and rockers) and for the sake of it while its all apart I'd do both cams (I bought BGA cams for £80 and £90). The drive boss can twist when timing issues have occurred and you'd never know unless you put your cam next to a brand new one. While you're at it send plenty of brake cleaner and compressed air down the oil returns from the head, then remove the sump and clean it, and the pick up gauze to make sure you don't get any recurring issues.

As far as compression goes, were you testing it with a dodgy cam? Even so if it ran beforehand and your changing all of the above you should be fine.

Mine broke 4 rockers, all on the inlet side and what felt like only 1 bent valve. The engine shop fitted 4 valves as they reckoned they'ed all taken a hit. The exhaust side didn't touch anything at all, not a mark to be seen - but you should have seen the difference in the cam lobes next to a brand spanker!

Just been onto Fords for a price

£485 + vat for 1 cam  silly money

Then theres loads of bits , so best part of 2.5K with the Clutch

Where were the BGA Cams from ? I have seen them on eBay , I wonder if my local spares shop can source them

Cheers
