Pulling me Hair as my Van will not Start.

Postby RayTrans » Sun Mar 26, 2017 7:36 pm

Hi all my Mk6 Transit 2.4 115 Bhp will not start after I changed 2 rocker which had broken, so I bought a Crankshaft sensor fitted it and it still will not start. Before I changed the 2 rocker the van would still start & run even do it ran like a bag of spanners. Any help will be greatly appreciated. cheers

I need to replace 1 broken rocker on mine + a cam or 2 + a timing chain

Im still not sure why my Cam gave up the fight , mine sounded like an old tractor when it eventually fired up

Did you check the valves were not bent on the rocker you changed ?

Hi Blower thanks for the reply but the engine was running before I changed the rocker did not do anything else so it should have fired up after changing the rocker, but it did not so I thought maybe the Crankshaft sensor got damaged when I took it out to check the timing got a new one put it in but it still will not start. Blower the only way to check if the valve is bent is to take off the head, but when I am turning the engine over all the rockers and valves move up & down looking in from the top. Cheers

Hi Nedforceone as I had the fuel lines off from the injectors to the pump I guessed I would have to bleed the lines going to the injectors did that but fuel is getting to the injectors is it enough I do not know, I was also thinking is it the solenoid at the back of the pump but I do not know much about the solenoid so I do not want to touch it unless someone on the forum tells me too, been honest I do not know when it is on the pump. I was also thinking could it be the immobilise again the van was starting perfect before I started to change the rocker so I am thinking why would it have failed. Again thanks for your help nedforceone cheers

Is this a tddi or a tdci engine ?

What did you disturb on the engine.

A tdci will not start if the cam position sensor is not connected.
A code read should identify any deliberate decision by the ecu to stop the engine running.

Hi v8dave my Transit it is a 2.4 Tddi. v8Dave I tried to take off as little as posible, I removed the front of the van rad, lights, grill, than took off the inlet maifold, Egr valve, and also removed the fuel pipes to the pump & Injectors, and the Crankshaft sensor to do the Tdc on the timing chain. that took out the rocker shaft replaced the broken rockers and checked the other to see if the were o put the rocker shaft back on, put the fuel pipes back on to check and see if valves were moving before I put everything back together and that is when I found out the engine will not start. thought it was air in the fuel lines so bleed the fuel lines still will not start, bought a new Crankshaft sensor put that in still will not start, turns over fast as I charged the battery to make sure it was at full 12+v Thanks for your help v8dave.

I think you need a code read to see what's wrong.

Depending on the age of the van the right ELM327 and Forscan software might be a better choice.

Or if near a member on the ids map then a pm to request assistance.

It could be that previously timing chain jumped and broke rockers and just by replacing them would still leave the timing out .
Or... when you replaced the rockers the camshaft/ sprocket was missaligned (jumped 1 or 2 tooth) and conseqwently there is no more compression being out of timing .
Undo one of the glow plug and try to spin engine feeling in the same time with your finger if there is some sort of compression .
Best would be to measure compression with a tester .

Hi amlav thanks for your reply. Every thing you said is bang on but when we line up the holes on the sprocket the 6mm drill bits all line up, even the Crankshaft senor hole and the valves on number one inlet are where they should be, this is what has me scratching my head (and everyone else I ask scratching their heads) at this stage I would have preferred to have found that the chain had jumped and that the valves are bent as I would have whipped off the head got a good second had one fitted it and be done, but now it is a case of all I wanted to do was check when the van started it would run like a bag of spanners so yes the head has to come off where as now if I take off the head and the valves are not bent I have wasted all that time and money for no reason. nothing easy. I am getting a code reader tonight to see if it can sheed light on why it will not start, if nothing turns up I will get a head. Thanks again cheers

Have you tried using a bit of brake cleaner just to see if it will fire
Then you would know if it was fuel related

Got a code reader ( Snap on) to the Transit and these were the code that came up
P1631----B1359----B2550----U1262
Is this the reason the van will not start :( :( :( :( :(
