Comfortable driving at 30mph?

Postby Karst » Thu Apr 06, 2017 7:53 pm

Hi All,

Despite several years of driving a Mk6 and being very happy with it apart from the rust, I finally have to acknowledge that it has a gearbox not designed to be happy at 30mph.

30mph in 3rd gear along the flat is over-revving, and in 4th gear it struggles. It seems about 25mph is the highest comfortable speed in 3rd gear, and 4th gear seems designed for a minimum of about 38mph.

Does anyone know of any cure for this?

Karst.

She's not well....you'll need codes read. Is the glow plug light flashing etc...??

She should happily plod along at 60mph in 5th.

I thought it must be a physical matter with the ratios of the gear cogs...??

It's been like this since I got it 4 years ago. The glow plug light never flashes.

Yes, 60mph in 5th is fine.

Ahh...I thought you meant it wouldn't go over 30mph....my bad.

There's nowt you can do about the internal gearbox ratios though....there are a few different final drive ratios available though.....FWD or RWD..??

It's a front wheel drive.

Why did Ford make a gearbox that is not happy at 30mph???

TBH...you're possibly the first we've had that has this issue...There should be plenty of torque available at low-ish rpm.

There's only two diff ratios for the FWD Mk6, 4.23:1 and 4.54:1... they also have two different axle splines....26 splines up to the end of March 2003 and 36 splines after that.

Based on the fact that it an early mk 6, I'll guess that it's a 75ps.
A remap would vastly improve the low down torque

Yeah, it's registered September 2000, X-reg.

So is the only thing I can do about this is get a remap?

I mean, I should at least try this first, right?

In my Google searching I have stumbled across RaceChip. I have taken the plunge and ordered the Ultimate model !

I can only see a Racechip box for the 125ps MK6?

Well it's cheaper and easier than changing the gearbox!

Yes, Thank you Mike, you are quite right about the RaceChip! That's no good then.

And Thank you Ake.

I found out it is a 75PS engine.

I also got it remapped today by someone who my local, long-standing, and very reliable mechanic uses. I drove about 6 miles afterwards, and barely noticed any difference at all.

Thank you knobby1.

It cost me £300 to get the remap today. I'll give it a week to be sure, but if this is all it does, nothing has really changed much  :x

Googling Vantuner, I found vantuner.co.uk based in Uxbridge, not very, very far from me but not just round the corner. Have I found the right one? What makes him better than the fella I just used?
