Blue smoke on start up

Postby Retired John » Wed Apr 19, 2017 8:13 am

Finally got all the other s##t sorted now it blows shiploads of blue smoke when started up first thing after sitting overnight or longer , after it warms up or is 2-3km up the road no more smoke or if stopped and restarted through the day , still have not replaced the glow plugs ( slack ) so they are disconnected would this effect it ? other suggestions have been seepage past the valve stems when parked ? all suggestions welcome :?

Blue smoke is usually oil but could still be a glow plug issue as it's getting a little cooler now here in down-under land, yours is the 125ps TDDi isn't it..? I "think" the higher ps TDDi's like using glow plugs from cold, not so much the lower powered ones.

Is she using/burning a silly amount of oil..? When warmed up, does she blow a lot of smoke after idling for an extended period..? Any blue/white smoke on hard acceleration?

Might pay to get the glow plugs sorted at least.

Nobby it is not using oil thats the dilemma and yes the first burst of throttle when out on the road she blows shiploads then it is over , I got a set of glowplugs and seals from Mick at Hervery Bay so just need to get them installed :? It was just after all the drama with gaskets and starters where every time I touched or changed stuff it turned to shite I was reticent to muck with it as apart from the smoke she is running like a swiss watch with no leaks now
All my concerns re the power steer leak were for nil it was the rubber ring on the inlet pipe into the box a 20c part and 5 min job 8)

Well just to update the results for anyone having similar issues
The smoke started to diminish after 500-800 km and after a run to ACT 2400km and back it is gone completely not a sniff at start up fanbloodytastic 8)
Also found out she will start even at -5 without glowplugs but took some winding over and lots of black smoke after starting but no blue  .
It was never a oil burn issue when running and just on startup after sitting overnight , the engine still shows as overfull the same as it did after adding 700ml of the additive 100ml/Litre so not using oil 8)
I felt sure there would be some oil use on the run home from Yass to Casino 1200km in 14hrs was a tough day and a big test as I was ringing her neck for every km and rarely dropped below 3000rpm even in the hills the only change was the gear it was in  not fun but it was a must do situation even the fuel consumption was acceptable at 14L per 100km :)
