Noisy Starting mk7 LWB RWD

Postby sealslayer » Wed Apr 19, 2017 6:33 pm

2008 LWB RWD Hi Top 2.4 - 145k miles

Hey all,
I have a problem with noise when starting the van in the mornings mostly.
It sounds like its struggling to start, as if the starter is having trouble turning the engine but it sounds like a pulley is stuck or hard to move as it makes a squeeling sound.
If it were a pulley that was causing the trouble would that pulley not be squeeling or making a whining sound whilst driving or should I be looking towards the starter as the culprit?

The engine has always turned and started after a couple of seconds but this afternoon after driving and stopping for about 10 minutes I started the engine and it acted as if the batteries were flat, after three attempts it did start.

Sounds to me like the starter motor is knackered.

It was indeed the starter.
New starter on and the noise has gone, I can't believe the difference in how quiet the new starter is, it sounds like a new van :D
