Should Have Researched!

Postby Jaffasoft » Thu Apr 20, 2017 9:41 am

Should have researched how to unscrew the plastic oil filter cap before trying to undo it. I put the wrench on the big plastic nut. Only put a little pressure on.. could hear/feel a bit of plastic starting to crack/crumble then drip drip the oil started. Never even budged or turned the oil filter at all, the plastic bolt just breaks instantly :( . Weak as!

It's draining the hot oil out over night and will be no driving here until can get a replacement part in ASAP. I guess using a proper tool is the recommended way or have I unscrewed it the wrong way it does unscrew anti-clockwise yeah??

Superglue might work, although I'm not sure I'd risk it. If it fails (e.g. gets knocked by a stone and comes off completely), you're going to be out of oil pretty quickly.

At the very least, make sure the bonding surfaces are completely clean of oil - use brake cleaner to remove all traces.

Do you know what sort of plastic the old cap is made from? It might have a recycling logo with a code to tell you. That might help you choose the best adhesive.

If it were me, at the very least, I'd be getting a new one on order straight away. TPUK might ship to Oz for less than AUD 87, provided you don't want super-fast shipping. Royal Mail for that sort of size/weight is under £10. If you do that, I'd suggest buying a few as it's quite common for them to break.

Looking around, it looks like the plastic is likely to be ABS, so rather than superglue (cyanoacrylate), I'd be tempted to use a more specialised adhesive. Try a plumbers' merchant for "solvent weld" adhesive for ABS waste water pipes.

Thanks for researching and bringing that specific information forward.

I have some "solvent weld" , it's a blue coloured thick liquid paste that goes on PVC pipes when you join them for water proofing, because I have done a bit with it self plumbing a little. Will look into it a little!

What about 'Araldite' got a bit of that too?!

Parked up out in the pouring rain like mad here tonight... won't be able know anymore what it's made of until can get under get it off. I like the idea of buying a couple of em. Well I was planning going away few days that may not be happening now.

P.S. When we buy things form China sometimes.... it takes about 6 weeks to get around to Australia.

I wouldn't use Araldite (epoxy resin). That's great for bonding surfaces that are porous (e.g. ceramics), but less good for things that aren't (like plastics).

You want something that will partially melt/dissolve the existing plastic surface before bonding in with it - that's why it's called a "solvent weld" rather than just a glue. It's basically made of plastic dissolved in a solvent; when you spread it on, it starts to dissolve the surface of the original plastic material, but then the solvent evaporates away leaving a welded joint.

You'll probably find that the postage cost is the same whether you buy 1 or 3.

Yeah, but that's the same for China to the UK too. I suspect that they group the packages together until they've got enough to fill an entire aircraft container and then send them all in bulk to keep the costs down. The £10 I mentioned was for a 5-7 working days service from Royal Mail. You can probably go cheaper if you're willing to wait for surface mail.

Check it's suitable for ABS as well as PVC.

I would agree, but if it's going to take weeks to arrive, maybe a properly glued one could work in the meantime.

That will require getting it properly degreased first, which I think will be far more challenging than finding a suitable glue.

I will go to our local car parts dealership and they can often get parts in overnight, will just have to put this down to my silly mistake and pay the price for convenience even though it's a rip off.

Don't forget that when the engine is running the filter bowl will be under pressure if you bodge it and it lets go when you are driveing and you lose the engine 87 dollars is better then thousands if engine goes bang if it was a life or death situation then it would be acceptable to do
