Dashboard is OUT YIPPEE, any tips on putting it back?

Postby paulrichardson » Fri Apr 21, 2017 12:27 pm

Hi Guys,

Thanks to your help (and a lot of swearing on my part) the Dash is out of my Tranny.

Just swapping the heater matrix today, then the dash goes back in.

Anybody got any tips how to get all the plastic heater pipes back in place?

Do I get them in first and try and fit the dash, or does the dash go in and wiggle the pipes in after.

And if anyone has any other tips to make it easier, it would be appreciated.

Regards,

Paul

The trick is not to stare too long at the space where the dash live because it starts to look intimidating.

The puppies will go back in later but just a bit fiddly although I'd rather that than struggle for access holding the whole dash. :?

I was lucky i only had to undo the dash then pull it back 6 inches or something.

Good luck :D

Just lay them in and put the dash in then hook them up

Hi Brains,

No offence to Loot, but I followed your advice.

I put all the bits in their correct places in the dash, and used some masking tape to hold them in place.

Lifted the whole lot up and over and in to position.

OK a few bits moved slightly and I had to wiggle them into place, but didn't take long and I managed it all single handed.

Job done, all bolted in place, just got to put the pretty bits back on (oh and the steering column, which was a pain to get through the hole in the floor).

Regards,

Paul

Hi Guys,

As I mentioned above the dash is back in place.

Been putting the steering column back in but am a bit worried about a rubber boot "thingy" which seems to be floating up and down on the column, just above the "tennis ball" where it goes through the floor.

I honestly can't remember were it was before I took the column out, but here it is now.

Image

Does this look right?

I think the gaiter might have originally fastened to the "tennis ball".

I'm a bit worried that I got something wrong, as the steering is rather important :!:

Paul

Thanks loot and ake, that's a relief, thought I'd got something wrong.

Just plugged all the cables back in and reconnected the battery.

She started OK and everything seems to work but after I switched it off there's a funny noise from under the bonnet.

Sounds like a very quiet squeal, it goes on and off about every 30 seconds and relay 8 is involved at it clicks when the noise goes on and off.

One other thing, when I turn the ignition off it takes a second or so before the engine stops?

Any clues on this one?

Regards,

Paul

The faint squeal is the egr motor imo, when my 65 plate citation does it lol.

Not sure about the rolling on, ignition switch/sticky relay?

The pcm squeals for a few seconds after switch off, and the egr makes that seesaw noise.

Hi,

Does that mean it always made those noises and I just haven't noticed it?

Regards,

Paul

P.S what do PCM and EGR stand for?

Hi,

I was fitting a new head unit yesterday (just mentioning it in case it matters).

Today the squealing noise is there all the time and the van won't start ( starter motor doesn't turn)

R8 is made (with ignition off) and even with the ignition off and key removed the low fuel and seatbelt warning lights are on.

I've disconnected everything I did yesterday and even pulled all the plugs out from the steering column and still the low fuel and seatbelt lights are on.

What have I done!!!!

HELP PLEASE,

Paul

Don't panic!

Retrace your steps and check that every connection you disturbed is put back in correctly.

Disconnect the new head unit to rule that out
Check that you have t trapped and nipped any wiring
Check the battery, it may need charged
