New to Transits and need some general information/advice

Postby uriahdemon » Sun Apr 23, 2017 7:47 pm

Hi, I have just bought for the first time a Ford Transit van. It is I think a MKIV and reg HN05 BJY if that helps. I work away from home and unfortunately dont have the paperwork with me for the VIN as I have tried the Etis website.

Basically I got this for a specific purpose last month. It has 110,000 on the clock, FSH and it came with 12 months MOT. When I viewed the van I did notice some filling/repair around the arches and sills.

The van engine starts first time every time and I have been on a couple of journeys with it recently and it has not missed a beat.

So basically I was wondering is it worthwhile to invest some money into the bodywork i.e. sills etc. I ask this as I may have a few pennies to invest in it soon and the engine is performing brilliantly so wish to hold onto this for quite some time.

My question in summary is, do you think it is worthwhile investing in......??

Hi matey

Before you invest anything have a good look and poke around underneath for rust and holes, if the underside looks solid then all should be good to start investing.

Thanks mate, the trouble is I can make a good guess on where to look but may miss something being a newbie.

Is there anywhere to go to get some guidance on what to check for....??

The van in the link is/was very bad but it show how bad mk6's can get

If in doubt you could take it to a local friendly garage and just ask them to have a look underneath and see what they think

Basic places are, all underneath, inner rear arches (where the arch meets the floor) inner front wings, door steps (under the plastic cover).

Outer front wings always rust and are cheap and easy to replace. N

Being a Transit, the place to look for rust is anywhere between the 2 bumpers  - mostly below the floor level.

As well as between the bumpers...you forgot the main part between the floor and roof...

I hear ya John....poor buggers in the UK....rain +salt + crud = rust.

I've a few stone chips too but just cover them with the missus clear nail polish...job done. Hopefully she won't find out too soon.
