Cluster Icons Remaining Lit with No OBD Faults Showing

Postby TrevTheCourier » Wed Apr 26, 2017 11:02 am

I have ford transit 2.2 mk7 . A while ago I had a fault appear on my clock cluster, which I still cant solve. Some of the icons remain lit when the engine is running and the lcd is showing dashes while the speedo is not working. Further, I have noticed I don't have the hill assist brake working either.

I took the van to a local garage that do my servicing. They claimed I needed a new EGR valve and duly replaced it. Unfortunately the fault with the lights remains. They claim that the two incidents were unrelated and just coincidence. A week later, I also needed a new alternator, which again the garage claimed was unrelated and just coincidence. When I asked why the lights were still lit on the clock cluster they advised that it was likely a fault with the cluster itself and should be replaced. My bill to this point was already around £450. So before replacing the clock cluster I researched on the internet and sent the cluster to an electronics company in the West Midlands who have specialist equipment for testing the clock. They tested it twice and found no faults with the cluster. So I've refitted it and am currently continuing to use the van with the cluster warning lights lit.

I should also point out that the garage state that there is no faults showing on the ODB (I think that's what its called) readout. This is a list of the issues:

ORANGE ENGINE BLOCK LIT
ORANGE ANTI SKID LIT
ORANGE ABS LIT
RED EXCLAMATION CIRCLE LIT
LCD PANEL SHOWING DASHES ONLY - NO NUMBERS
SPEEDO NOT WORKING
HILL ASSIST BRAKE NOT WORKING

I am a long distance courier and have done hundreds of miles with the faults to date. The engine runs well. Since the EGR was fitted I have noticed a juddering or lack of smooth control of the throttle at just above idling, especially noticeable between 3rd and 4th gear or when stopping and starting in traffic queues.

I am willing to pay for the repair to be done. But I don't have a bottomless pocket for repairs that seem not related. So I am turning to these forums for a little bit of help before I take it back to the garage. Could anyone with a reliable knowledge of the electronics of a Transit offer me some suggestions as to what might be causing the lights to remain lit please?

I really appreciate the help.

Dashes on the LCD and speedo not working is often a duff battery....Does your machine have twins fitted? Was an option on the 2.2 FWD's.

I'd be getting the battery/s properly load tested to rule them out.

Do you know what diagnostic machine your garage used on your van? Some of them can't see "all" the fault codes, pending and/or historic codes may not show up at all...IDS is your friend.

The van has only one battery and that is perfectly in order. I don't know what code machine they use at the garage suffice to say that they repair a lot of vans. I am due to take the van in for a service soon but was hoping to have some idea what this fault was before they charge me for exploratory work and parts that don't solve the issue.

On a parallel - I posted this issue as a question on the website "Just Ask UK" where they claimed to have Ford experts to answer your questions for a fee. However, after nearly a week now no such expert has come forward and they've offered me a refund. Now it looks like this forum can't help either! Where do I turn next!

Like the Lord mentioned it needs read with ids, other than that it sounds like wiring shorting out somewhere, I'd start searching all the wiring harness in and around engine bay and check all earth cables where they bolt on to inner wing/chassis area and on engine,
Can you think of anything that happened to the van just before this happened, or had any work done just before it happened, what was the alternator changed for??

I'd suspect a abs fault, but needs proper codes read on a decent machine.

I'll double check with the garage what equipment they use for the codes when I book it in for a service.

The lights came on shortly after filling with diesel one day. The service station is a BP and on a main road. That is when I rang the garage and asked what was wrong. They advised bringing it in and that is when they fitted the valve. It did not solve the lights issue though.

They claimed nothing to be showing in the codes and no known faults with ABS or other linked icons. That said, they might have made an error. I'll question more when I return for the service soon.
