Pump learn and injector pilot is easy enough and is in the service functions :D

Just follow the on screen instructions and I'd recommend doing it from cold.

Pcm update is a bit more in depth and you will require to have access to module programming
For that you'll need to install xprog

the injector pilot might not work, it can be a b*stard, and end up aborting the procedure. sometimes its not as simple as just running the program in ids

What sort of milage does the engine have? are there any codes currently present? is the EGR working? its a good idea to have a look at the cylinder balance figures on the live data when the engine is up to operating temperature.

Also make sure that you use a Ford or Denso PRV and SCV if you have to change those.

The procedure is simple to run,

Obviously if there's a problem it may fail,

Taking a van for an mot is easy, passing may not be so easy!
He only asked how to do it

Right a little update.

We plan to use the van for towing our race car around and saturday was our first trip doing that. The van drove there and back ok apart from the wind noise ( sounds like door rubbers or something)

We arrived home and turned the van off and coming back to it about 5 minutes later it wouldn't start, cranked but wouldn't fire. It almost felt like it was immobilised, so got out locked/unlocked the door and it eventually went after doing this 3 times.

This morning fired up the laptop and did the pump learn no problem, but the injector pilot learn kept failing on the 3rd sequence of five and i got code 80 all 3 times. Any ideas?

The van seems to drive ok with a reasonable amount of power, it's a little rattly when its cold but as soon as it warms up it's fine. it has done 200k after all.

also something i noticed earlier, when accelerating hard it gives off a few puffs (small amount) of grey ish smoke . im assuming my issues are fuel related maybe pump ?

You alway will get the engine malfunction message come up until the injector pilot has been carried out successfully.

If your engine has done 200k, I would take a guess at injectors they are probably worn, if its stopping on stage 3 its probably the 3rd cylinder well ids thinks that, in reality its probably at least a couple of them, if not all 4.

Check you have the correct injection correction factors for the correct cylinder then remove the injectors and get them tested. Well thats what I would do

I have used diesel bob before and found them to be pretty good

Next stage I would think it needs a leak off test performed on the injectors.

As punto says a leak off test could also give you an idea as to the state of the injectors, but its just a comparative test unless you have the figures as to what the leak of rate should be.

But as you have IDS go on to the data logger, then PCM, select cylinder balance, select all 4 cylinders on the options. Also select the fuel rail pressure that needs to be stable at around 23kpa it shouldn't be moving around all over the place

let the engine get up to operating temperature then at idle look at the readings. All I know is that the measurements need to be in ug not mg, so if you are seeing 1.23mg for example in one or more of the cylinders, IDS will not perform the pilot learn in my experience. If they all say ug (which I doubt) that is probably not your problem

Im not trained in IDS its just what I have worked out, so I could be wrong, if anyone knows what the cylinder balance figures should be between to show a healthy injector, I would love to know

did a leak of test today . 2 of the pots had about 40% more in than the other two . so i assume we may have an issue there
