Air con not working

Postby ajw599 » Sat May 06, 2017 2:45 pm

Hi,

I'm trying to work out why the air conditioning on our mk6 rwd isn't working. The green light on the switch comes on. The clutch doesn't seem to be engaging (I can't see it move). There doesn't seem to be any power across the two contacts on the plug. The engine bay and passenger fuses are OK (thank you for the "MK 6) fuse, relay and diode locations/ratings" thread).

It was previously run dry, but has been fully recharged and pressure tested.

Any pointers on what to try next please? Or a link to a wiring diagram?

Next step for me would be to try to trigger the clutch, but it's a two pin plug and I'm not sure which pin is which.

The wiring loom near the plug has two orange/white wires just cut off bare with no termination. I don't know if that's relevant. The wiring on this van has been heavily customised by a previous owner.

Did it work when it was repressurised?

The is an under/over pressure switch, I'd check that is ok.
mk7 08reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD
mk6 X reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD - scrapped
mk4 J reg 2.5 L300 LWB MHR RWD - sold on

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

No, never worked in the month we've owned it. The refill was an attempt to get it working again. The garage that sold it us said "air con just needs a regas". Any idea where I can find the pressure switch?

Am I correct that there are two pressure senders - one on the reservoir behind the power steering reservoir and the other at the bottom on a T in the pipework below the compressor?

In our case the wire from the lower sender is cut and looks very similar (have the same orange/green colour scheme) to the loose piece of cut wiring I referred to earlier. The tail from the sender is too short to reconnect. I could short the two loose ends together to see if that kicks it into life. Slightly nervous about causing more damage by doing that though.

I have a similar problem on my Mk7; it's full of gas, lights working, fan cutting in, but the clutch isn't kicking in on the compressor. I tried physically pushing the pulley to see if it was sticking, and tried power to both of the wires via a powerprobe, but it's not having any of it. I have a new compressor to go on, but on a MK7 FWD it's a b!tch to get at, so I'm saving up to get it done in a garage  :P

Yes, there are both high and low pressure switches, and they both need to be functional, as does the fan :)

I managed to get good access by jacking up the front drivers side a bit. Its only three or four bolts, to remove the compressor. Its that easy, you could arrange with a air con place to take your gas out and then put it back when your finished. To remove the belt you just need a 1/2 inch socket wrench on the tensioner.

Is this on a Mk7 :?: It's easy on a Mk6, but it's at the rear of the engine on a Mk7, and I couldn't see any way of getting at it, apart from underneath, with the van up in the air

Yes mk7 2.2 and access from underneath. I think one of the bolts is a little difficult but I have had worse.

That's interesting, thanks for the info, perhaps I need to look harder and save some money

It's still not done as I've been unable to arrange a suitable time when I can do without the van. The garage have quoted me £150 plus VAT, including taking it to be degassed and regassed, as they don't have a machine themselves
The pump I have to go on, is S/Hand known working, and is a fairly new unit, It cost me about £100, which is over £300 cheaper than a new one :!:
