Mk6 petrol versus Mk7 petrol MPG

Postby Boxster1 » Thu May 25, 2017 5:28 pm

Hi

Searched the forum and no answers.

My 2003 Mk6 350 High Top LWB petrol achieves a pitiful 18 to 20 MPG.
I'm considering getting a 2010 Mk7 350 High Top LWB petrol
Anybody know what the MPG would be ?

I suspect it'll be something similar....why not go for a diesel..?? Most are good for ~30mpg+.

Hi mate you don't say what sort of driving you do ?
If its all in central London then ok what would you expect ? My wife has a petrol Fiat Multipla and she struggles to get over 20mpg round town .
If on a run I would expect 25mpg ( I have a Jumbo and thats what I get ) I also have a MK6 petrol Luton and I get 18-22mpg from that but not really a fair comparison there .
Is everthing OK with the engine etc ?
Any fault codes coming up ?
I find even changing the oil can add 1-3 mpg
Are the tyres at the correct pressures ? that is a real killer for the MPG on these vans .
Does it have LPG ? if so it might be worth getting it fixed , if not get it fitted plenty of places doing lpg fitting now for less than £750
Expect 4-4.5 miles for a litre on gas but I only pay 44p per litre and a much extended engine life , mine has now done 300,00+ miles
On your first point mpg for the later transit 2.3 all I can say is that there are always a good selection on ebay needing engine repairs for sale !!!
The later engine is a bit of a dog really and is not a good match for the van, I believe that the MPG was worse then the MK6 as well .

my mk6 lpg gets about 18+/- all the time, round town or run, its geared for town though, revving its nuts at 70 on motorway, don't know why its gear like it is, its only a 260

Thanks for your replies.

I took the plunge today and got a 2010 Mk7 350 High Top LWB petrol/LPG.
Filled it up with LPG and drove the 168 miles home. Mostly on Motorway and dual carriage ways.
Kept it between 50mph and 60mph most of the way.
Computer display crept up to 23.7 MPG. When I got home I topped the LPG up again and did the calculation.
A very impressive 25.7 MPG especially when paying 55p a liter.
