Mk7 rattle

Postby Bertiemje » Fri May 26, 2017 8:26 am

Good morning all. So last night I was driving my 08 double cab tipper home and I think the engine may have taken its last breath.
So driving to the job I had on the van sounded a little tappety, thought I had better check the oil before I headed back later, I finished work checked oil it was half way up the dipstick so I headed home. As I was driving the noise became increasingly louder until the tappety sound became a definite rattle with a slight decrease in power. No smoke, no oil dumped, temperature was fine and no lights on the dash out of the ordinary.
So mr AA man came to my rescue and asked me to start her up, which it did with little effort perhaps half a crank more than normal it ran for no more than 3 seconds before he declared it "terminal". He said it was the crank barrings. So my questions to you good people are
1 can he diagnose that issue that quickly and easily?
2 are there things I can test myself to determine if his diagnosis is correct?
3 do any of you guys recognise these symptoms from your vehicle and how did you fix it? I'm hoping it's a fuse. Lol
Thank you for any help.

A more common occurrence is the injector clamp bolts loosen off which allows the injectors to bounce up and down which is noisy, also allows fuel to go into the rocker and it dilutes the oil which can thin out and rise on the dipstick(although I've never had it that bad.)

It starts off under load And Gets louder as the injector copper washers get pummeled and the bolt loosens off even more.

If you remove the oil cap you'll see it chuffing, it Is basically cylinder compression.

Thanks loot, if it's chuffing will that confirm the crank bearings or the injectors?

You'll see chuffing but i don't think you'll hear any knocking, the compression will squeeze past the injector seals on tickover.
But don't quote me on that.

Put it this way, it'll be fairly straight forward to check the injectors where as the shells Is pretty terminal.

am i right in thinking if the injectors were loose they would be "dancing"? it does seem to be chuffing a little.

Not necessarily to the feel, the compression may be high enough to bypass the copper washer but not be that obvious visually, the injector supply pipes are quite strong.

Best thing is to partially undo the supply pipe and take up the plastic cover for the injector clamp then test the 8mm bolt to see if it is loose.

If you find that it is or you just want to discount it, you'll need 4 copper washers (eBay £5) and 2 injector clamp bolts, about £8 Ford.

You need to be proactive, I'd remove the drive belt and give it a short run and see if that it's any different (it discounts the pulleys and i can hear a squeak which could be the aux belt and tensioner, the belt can catch the tensioner and grab at the engine)
You need to also check the injector copper washers, easiest is to replace them tbh, usually there's chuffing and possibly diesel/oil around the rubber injector seals just on top of the injectors (wet). you can get a small 8mm spanner and find the bolt in the centre of each injector clamp (there's 2 clamps) and gently see if it'll tighten up, they'll be loose i expect, don't force then up but you can try slightly undoing them firdt just to be sure they aren't glued or seized in there if that makes sense?.

Slightly harder to diagnose is the pistons, i would expect a decent garage to have the tools and knowhow, pressure check or borescope or whatever.

There's not really much we can do from this end tho just based on the video.

Yes you've a big problem :(

Either a engine rebuild or replacement engine required.

Had a trusted mecanic have a look yesterday and he's convinced it's the bottom end. So new engine is called for. Perhaps I should have got a vw 8)
