2005 T350 115 2,4dci flashing glow lights!

Postby Roystone » Sat Jun 03, 2017 11:56 am

Hi
2005 rwd 2.4 dci transit
A description of the failure:

Started off drove circa 1 mile vehicle cut out and ground to a halt been travelling at 30-40 mph B road ( vehicle had been sitting for 3.4 weeks before and had to be jump started) . So I then tried to restart and it did and travelled 500 metres and cut out again.

The fuel gauge was reading below 1/4 so I immediately assumed pehaps this had stuck and went and got a couple of gallons of dioesel and tried again. ( no Joy).

I then had the tranny towed back, and even tried to bump start it for 400 metres no joy.

I then started reading the forum and saw the suggestion that it could be the fuel filter, ( I have no history of the servicing prior to my ownership about 1 year) and I had only changed the oil. I changed the fuel filter It would not start and the light was still flashing, battery was getting low so I tried to tow start it again, Yes this failed.
So i continued reading the forum and did what I should have done in the first place, pulled the fault codes.
Code reader used was a Launch x431
THese are in this order
P1665 injection pump : Control module Communications : Continuous memory DTC
P1608 : PCM internal fault : Continuous memory DTC
P0335 : USE CPS circuit fault :Continuous memory DTC
P?216 :Injection timing control circuit :Continuous memory DTC - I have read about cable fault but this is normally FWD?, So I am at a loss as to what I should check and how? As this sequence does not match items I have read other than the one where they suggest the electronic black box is dead. THis I find hard to believe after the restart. Also the vehicle is sitting in Sweden so not very transit friendly garages and mighty expensive. Thank you for all the suggestions and guidance you can give in advance.

Tddi has a better fuel system, it could be a dead pump.
Someone who knows more about the tddi might be along soon to help you out. N

I'd be careful with tow starts as they've been known for timing chain jumping teeth,
Did you put a genuine ford filter on (non genuine can cause problems) , and did you crack open injectors fuel pipes to release the air /bleed fuel sysrem

Hi andz

Thanks for the q -
The answer --not a genuine filter believe it was a mann product ( gren and yellow box)
I did not crack the fuel pipes - i thought that this being a modern engine it might have self bleed, so this is now on the agenda for tomorrow evening.

Thanks for the advice re bump starting, I saw the sticky yesterday and thought oh ... so knowing my current luck created a new problem.

The glow light still flashes even though I changed the filter and tried to clear the codes so I assumed this was not the problem.

The fuel pump failing is definitely in line with my suspicions re failure mode. What is the easiest way to check this without special tools - can I open the feed to the filter?

Updat,

No joy on cracking the feed to the injector. now need to charge the battery and see if I can get fuel to flow!

Any testing suggestions would be apprecaited, as I have found a local mechanic who has dealt with diesels ( they are not common in Sweden and Fords are rare - mostly renault and fiat here in the land of volvo) but mostly commercial who is preapred to have a look.

Thanks

Hi

An update, got it to the local large commercial diesel mechanic, we cracked the injectors and got air out of the system on all injectors. It still did not start.

Checked every fuse we could find, in the engine bay and under the tray in the dash all were good.

Not checked any relays and dont know which ones might control the heaters, injection

So got the launch x431 on again.

Cleared all teh DTC and got a blank display cranked the vehicle with the flashing glow light and got these codes: In the order they are shown on the launch screen

P1665 Injection Pump Control module communication
P 1608 PCM internal fault
P0216 Injection timing control circuit.

So it would appear that P 1631 has left the scene of the crime, or maybe I did not crank it for long enough.

All ideas would be really appreciated, As I am totally lost now.

Thank you

Hi All,

An update having gone through the forum once more and utilised information provided by APH Andy ( Thank you for this information provided it was very clear and excellent), with pictures of connectors and fuse box etc etc, unfortunately this has not returned any positive news.

However this leads to the awful conclusion the injector pump is not happy. The mechnic who is doing the work stated he believe there is not the pressure being delivered to open the injectors and that this pump is shot.

OK so a new pump is needed. I have a different question now which I will open a new thread as to pump where( to buy) and what( type and differences 90/100) etc
?

Hi All

Update Transit runs fine on start gas, so no problemm caused by bump start.

THe key is very worn and taking away the plastic cowl the immobilser ring was hanging loose. all has been put back together but the key is still very worn - and the rror codes come back.

Is it possible this is the cause of the problem and the immobiliser needs resetting?

Hi Roystone I also have a 115 T350 Transit and was trying to start it after it had a few issues and it would not after a long time of trying everything I was at the point of crushing the yoke, but I went NO it has to start so I said to the wife I was going to start from the begin and go step by step so
Number 1: I put as much diesel into the tank 3/4 to near full so I know it will be easier for the diesel to get to the pump
Number 2: I got a new fuel filter and put it in and FILLED THE FILTER UP WITH DIESEL.
Number 3: I checked the wiring at the back of the pump to make sure it was good and tight.
Number 4: Two cans of easy start.
NUMBER 5: THE TRANSIT STARTED:

Roystone If I was you I would get a loan of a good Battery as the turning speed if very important. Than I opened the injectors to get all the air out. Than with some easy start spayed it into the air intake pipe as my wife cranked it over and the most important if it has made an effort to start KEEP CHECKING THE FILTER AND KEEP IT TOPPED UP WITH DIESEL, i HAD TO DO IT THREE TIMES BEFORE IT STARTED.

One Ford Mechanic and two diesel mechanic told me the engine was fu*ked and get a new one but she is now running like a mouses heart been followed by three cats, I had every know fault code likes yours but since I got her running wiped the codes no more has come back a friend said that was dues to a low voltage Battery as it could not power all the systems

Roystone I hope this helps

Hi Ray

Thanks for the advice.

I will try to fill it with diesel, and go through the process again. It is giving fuel to the injectors but the mechanic thinks the pressure is not enough. I can see the issue with the battery .. I just hope it is something like you experienced.

Clearly it runs on start gas, it starts almost immediately - so it is definitely a fueling issue. THe worry I have as suggested is it is the bosch fuel pump. However , the fact it died while driving, and then started for a short period afterwards, does not make logical sense re an electronic fail, whereas it does re a fuel supply error.

However another line of attack, just got to get enough cans of diesel to fill it!
