The item you marked in blue is one of the water connections to the cooler.
If exhaust gases are coming out of the blue pipe then your cooler has failed and needs replacing.
The original pipe from the stub marked in blue would have gone to the heater.
There would originally have been a second water connection in to the egr cooler from the oil filter housing and oil cooler, it is behind the egr valve in the image you've posted.

Ah cheers Dave for the swift response. Looks like someone before me has bodged it for some reason and just left it. I will get onto researching all the info you've given me. Thanks again. Marcus

Once that is done you could remove the hardware.
However the blanking plates on <a href="http://ebay.co.uk" class="skimwords-link" target="_blank" data-skimwords-id="874161" data-skimlinks-editor="0" data-skimwords-word="ebay" data-group-id="0" data-skim-creative="300001" data-skim-product="874161" title="" occurrence="1" data-skim-node-id="194:Howevertheblankingpl_2" style="">ebay</a><span style="position: absolute;"></span><span style="position: absolute;"></span> seem to be designed to fit at the egr valve, you would need to blank the connection between the exhaust manifold and the cooler with your own design of plate.

That looks like the 3.2 200ps 5 pot lump

There's also a bracket holding the EGR cooler assy to the back of the cyl head...a real ball-ache to get at.
If trying to get at it from underneath, you may need to remove the starter to get access to the passenger side bolts. If they're badly corroded, I don't like your chances without removing the gearbox to get decent access. Good luck...you're gunna need it.

You'll also need to get the egr deleted in the engine software, otherwise you'll have the engine warning light on.
