Mk7 power steering fluid

Postby dirtydog » Mon Jun 26, 2017 1:31 pm

Is there a drain plug for the power steering?
Also what fluid should I be using in it? Haynes book of lies gives 2 options, red or green

Looked at the fluid in mine and it's more of a black colour so no hints there

The colour is cosmetic.

Get something of the correct specification.

I tried that it came out kind of black  which is why I was thinking it could do with changing.

Don't know so didn't stick my neck out.

I've seen brake fluid in different colours but all was to the same spec, I suspect some vehicle manufactures might have odd colours for their own brand stuff so they can see if someone has used something else.

Found my owners hand book, the Mrs had "put it away"

Spec in the book is for the red one.

Thinking what I'll do is syringe out the brake fluid from the reservoir and then just top up or is there a better way to do it?

Thats why I said bloody mechanics. Sometimes I think I'd have been better off asking the chuckle brothers to do my servicing.

Yep . Thats what I've did . Syringed out as much as I could . The new and old fluid in time will mix and than maybe go trough same process again .

never changed it on a transit, but have done an iveco daily, iveco had a filter, once you took the filter out you could put a bit of hose down onto the return pipe... start engine up and it pumps all the old stuff out while you pour new in...

no room to squeeze something down onto or into the return pipe? doesn't have to be a great fit

That's exactly what I was thinking of doing.

Popped into my local Andrew page place this afternoon, told them I what I wanted but they insisted on looking it up on their system and then tried to sell me a bottle of the green fluid for £18, told them it's the wrong specification and got "well that's what the system says it should be"
They stock Carlube brand and I checked online yesterday and found the right spec carlube stuff is atf q3 so I asked for that. He was pretty confused as it's automatic transmission fluid but the spec is correct for what my handbook says it should be
