Ford transit 2.4 t350 temperature gauage

Postby Supernick » Fri Jun 30, 2017 7:59 pm

Hi all I have a ford transit 2.4 t350 04 plate and I'm having problems with my temperature gauage bascially when I'm sat in traffic or just pottering around town it sits at half way but as soon as I go to 70 or a little more the temperature gauage rises into the 3 quarters and over then the van starts slowing down especially on hills, the van is not overheating in anyway and it's not losing a water or smoking,I have feeling it's the temperature gauage sender unit as I have had the dash clock checked as I was told it maybe the resistor but all was fine.am I right in thinking temperature gauage sender unit and if so do you know where abouts its located located as I searched everywhere for it but can't seem to find it anywhere

It bolts in at the inlet side I think, near the glow plugs (but I could be wrong) the temp gauge reads the cylinder head temperature not the water temperature.

Does that mean that I have 2 different sensors on it then? As I would need to find the one for the temp gauage as I believe this is what my problem is

No the temperature gauge on near the speedo reads the cylinder head temperature, there is no water temperature gauge.

The cylinder head temperature sensor is on the rear of the cylinder head.

Check your thermostat, sounds like the head sensor is working and the ecu is backing off the engine power to stop it overheating.

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

I think the gauge is fine and that you either have a stuck thermostat, blocked radiator or dying water pump

I'd be very interested to hear if you resolved this problem. I have a similar one (2006 350 2.4tdci, RWD, LWB hiroof, Mk7). I recently replaced the engine for a second hand 2010 unit, and ever since have had a similar overheating problem. Seems to be fine at lower speeds, but when you get up to 60 plus, or if working a bit harder, say going up a long hill, the temp gauge starts to rise up to red line. If I ease off the accelerator a lot it will go down fairly quickly, or I can prevent it going up too high if I ease off as I see it go up. The engine does not seem to be getting over hot - and the gauge returns to normal within a few minutes, so that doesn't suggest a real overheating. Has been in to the garage several times for a look but they cannot isolate a problem - including checking thermostat and waterpump, so I'm wondering if the gauge if dodgy? I don't think it was renewed when the replacement engine was fitted, I I saw in my Haynes manual that Ford recommends that it is replaced if disturbed. Any thoughts anyone...?

hi there, I had the exact same problem with my 2002 2.4 di 15 seater minibus. turned out to be the water pump impeller. changed water pump and it's now right as rain again. hope this helps.
