Help needed van cut out

Postby entps » Sat Jul 15, 2017 4:56 pm

ive just bought a 2001 transit from my brother after it cut out on him while driving home, so far ive plugged in the ford super f diagnostics and have fault codes p1664 and p1564 appearing.
What tests can i do to try to pinpoint the problem as ive heard of people replacing fuel pumps only to find the problem reappears due to the edc unit being faulty.
The van never failed to start and didnt appear underpowered before it just cut out, im making the assumption if the pump was at fault it would of had a few issues before dying completly.
Has anyone got any ideas where to start any help will be appreciated
thanks

It is possible that the wiring to the pump could be damaged, that tends to affect fwd rather than rwd.

I thought 90's had a VP30 pump rather than a VP44 but the aa code reader might not know how to tell them apart.

Have a read here

There should be a link off that page to the checks on the wiring.
mk7 08reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD
mk6 X reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD - scrapped
mk4 J reg 2.5 L300 LWB MHR RWD - sold on

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

FWD suffer from the wiring loom chaffing where it passes over the starter motor, there is a thread for it somewhere. N

ive managed to get under the van today and removed the starter out of the way i cant see any obvious damage as the wiring is covered in what seems to be a padded sheathing. Will i need to strip the sheathing to check the wiring or would this problem only occur if the sheathing has worn through ?

You need to strip back the sheathing on the loom where it bends around the starter. The wires can break internally with no outside visible damage. Ideally test each wire for continuity, using a multimeter, whilst flexing the loom

If you find any dodgy sections, you'll need to cut out the offending section and solder in a slightly longer run. Mine had this before I owned it, (after the pump and injectors were changed!), and it's still running fine 6 years later 8)

I found about 3 places on mine that need repairs around the starter I just need time to do it, bloody ford.

While you have the starter off test it don't assume its working correctly. N

If the wiring looks good then I'm afraid with the codes you have (just re read your original post) it sounds like a dead pump, what area are you in?

Karl might have a second hand pump to sell. N
