Rewiring Cigar Lighter

Postby nottery » Fri Jul 21, 2017 8:40 am

Hi there,

I noticed that the cigar lighter wasn't working, so i traced it back to the passenger fuse box, specifically fuse 58 (20A) cigar lighter. What has happened is one side of the connector that the fuse blade goes into has broken off (popped through). My question is, what would be the best place to get another 12v from? I was thinking i could get it by splitting off the 12v constant wire on the radio. What would you guys do in this situation?

Have found this forum to be a valuable source of information,
Thanks Nick.

don't hook the lighter up to the radio, you wil burn out the wires when you load the lighter plug up.
grab the main input of the fuse box, made a decent splice (solder, don't use those stupid clamps that cut into the wire) and put in a new 20A capable fuse in line as a replacement fuse.

or get a new fuse box from a scrapper.

Just to be clear, the terminal behind the fusebox that the spade fuse pushes through has failed yes? So you only have 1 spade showing?

Generally the top spade goes to the bus bar and the bottom spade goes to the output/device/light whatever. which spade has gone?

If your spade got hot and broken then it must have been loose and arcing out slowly heating up and burning.

Post a picture would help :-)

Thanks All for the replies.

Sorry i'm not sure about all this terminology, when you say spade, are you referring to the thing that the fuse blade goes into. If so yes, there's only 1 showing, the bottom connection.

I'm not sure where the main input of the fuse box is, i'm good with soldering, wouldn't use crimps for this.

I managed to slide the passenger fuse box out (not very far), but couldn't find any loose wires that had popped out from behind.
It looks like there is a bit of plastic that has broken off that was holding the female terminal in place. Probably from me sticking multimeter probes into. (oops)

Not sure about replacing the fuse box,

I've attached a picture.

Thanks again everyone for your input, Nick

My van been a camper van I rewired both cigarette plugs to the leisure battery and fuse box you could maybe run a fused wire from your battery if you don't want it live all the time also put a switch in line

Can you confirm that it isn't just missing? Some vans don't have all of the fuses available, also some fuses have been marked down wrong in the technical info.

So, if you can see the terminal inside or if someone with a mk6 can confirm the fuse number is correct?

Typically to repair it or add it you'd split the fusebox and add it, you can either go to the main power bus bar or find a wire that goes to the bus bar and splice to it.

I wonder tho if that fuse is the cigar lighter 1 and if they were an option on some??

Will have another look tomorrow to see whether its missing or just popped through.
I'm currently in the process of converting it to a camper, so, at this stage will most likely rewire from the leisure battery.
Would someone be able to help me identify the (Main power bus bar), what it looks like?

Thanks all, Nick.

Thanks all, Nick.

It is the main power feed to most of the fuses, 1 leg of the fuses will be bus and the other leg will be output from the fuse. So say the top leg/pin will all be going to say a main 60a fuse. And each of the bottom legs go to the device it is powering but the fuse is rated for the required load, cigar is 10A according to Neds post.

Yes? :-)

As loot said mine didn't have it in the fuse box I think that was another reason I wire to the leisure battery's it was 8 years ago when I did mine so not to sure why I did it

I think i understand loot.
Here's a photo from my Haynes Manual 4775 (X to 56 reg), its numbered differently but fuse location is the same.

Thanks Again, Nick.

Just found this post from a few years ago,
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=96039,

Looks to be the same issue i'm having, will have a good look tomorrow.
Might try looking at fuse locations that are stated as 'not used' ( ie. F50 & F64 ) as i took the fuse blades out of them.
Thanks Everyone for your help :D

Just an update on this cigar lighter fuse issue.

So today i put fuse blades back into the spots on the Passenger fuse box that were stated as (not used) in my Haynes Owners Workshop Manual (4775),
to be more specific, F50 & F64.
And VOILA , Cigar lighter is now Working!. along with rear wipers.

Fuse 50 was the Cigar Lighter
Fuse 64 was the rear wipers

Thanks Everyone for your help!

Hope this helps someone else in the future.

Nick.
