Postby carl20 » Fri Jul 21, 2017 3:31 pm

Recently changed a wheel bearing and seem to have conflicting advice regarding the torque for wheel nut.
My tor questions wrench is in inch pounds .
Any clear advice welcome

148 lb-ft / 200Nm according to Ford. They aren't easy to get undone when they have been tightened on that much though...

The wheel lung nuts that holds on the tire or the bearing preload nut. That's the one that would be in inch-pounds. Above advise is goods for the wheel lug nuts?

It's the 36mm nut that goes on to the front driveshaft.
My question is what is the torque for it in inch- pounds as my wrench is in inch-pounds?

autodata has this, will double check ford TIS if you prefer to go off that.

and according to an online calculator

250nm = 184.39053725 ftlbs
420nm = 309.77610258 ftlbs

Lb/in is Lb/ft x 12. And in this case it's fecking tight.

Gav is quite correct.....Don't know what you're trying to do it with a lb-in torque wrench...not much use to you for this job.

Yep....420nm=~310lb/ft = 3720lb-in....I'd like to see a lb-in torque wrench which can do that..! :mrgreen:

So you'll need 155lb hanging off a 2ft bar to even get close.

By way of a gauge, 300 lb/ft is enough to lift the wheel off the axlestand if you pull up .......

for some reason I misread lbs/in and thought he wanted answer in ft/lbs lol
I used a breaker bar and about 4 feet of pole to remove mine, so yes they are damned tight lol

I recently went looking for torque wrenches that could do up to around 450NM (to cover various jobs) and I found most were going to cost a few hundred pounds. Eventually I found something that looks good and fits my price range, the Teng 3492AG-E (3/4" drive). I've heard that the torque on the axle nut is very important for the life of the bearing. Is it a pre-loading type of thing? Are the rotations between torques just to make sure the rollers are seated properly?

I'm fortunate to have access to Britool wrenches and the means to check their calibration.

Apparently yes.

Yes, fairly normal practice on preloaded bearings.
