MK6 2.4 5 speed, Rear diff 5.13

Postby wicklabilly » Tue Aug 08, 2017 6:54 am

Hello all. Me transit tipper tows an 850kg wood chipper, lots of kit and usually 2/3 men plus anything up to 2 Ton on the rear.

It has a 5.13 rear diff and even when I haven't got the chipper on the tow bar she struggles as the gearing feels to high and I have to give it 'max beans' and murder the clutch and ultimately the gearbox to get her moving along.

If I want to fit a slightly lower ratio rear diff to give me better acceleration and tractability which one should I go for bearing in mind mine is currently a 5.13 ? Thanks for the help :)

As others have said. You need bigger truck and I'm pretty sure you already have lowest ratio diff available

Hello, yes i'm deffo overloaded. I always tip out on site or close by to where I have been working unless it's a small load of wood chip and i'm close to home, in that case I can tow the chipper as well without to much stress on the drive train. Due to the areas where I work (pretty extreme hills and narrow lanes) I need lower ratios and i'm fairly certain there is a diff that's more suitable then the stock 5.13 that's currently fitted?

Thanks.

Yet again thank you Ake. I seem to remember someone saying the lower spec engines like the 90hp have lower ratio diffs. I used to drive a 5 speed,100HP MK7 that had the 'towing diff' and it was an astounding vehicle, so tractable and nothing fazed it.

Just getting a price on a crown wheel and pinion from a 5.88 diff, apparently that's all I need to retrofit to my existing diff to lower the gearing. Thanks for all the help and advice on this one folks. :)

Lol....you are saying that the the Mk7 with a higher ratio (5.11 - the towing diff) is astounding & the Mk6 with a lower ratio (5.13) is over geared.

The Mk7 RWD are all fitted with Dana rear axles so you have the option to change the crown wheel & pinion in the existing axle. :)

The Mk6 uses different axles....the 5.88 crown wheel & pinion you mention above won't fit your existing diff housing - ya need to change the whole axle. :x

Additionally....no offence intended, but you can only drop so much on a Mk6 that's not worth much to start with....personal opinions being what they are I would be looking at a remapped 115~140ps Mk7 with a 6-speed box & a 4.27 diff....you'll have higher torque with a remap, lower ratio gears with a 6-speed box & retain the option of dropping down to a standard 5.11 crown wheel & pinion if you decide that a 4.27 is anything other than perfect.

As the previous person said the crown wheel and pinion on the 5.88 axle will be larger than the 5.13 or 4.63. Bearings will be different as well as halfshafts etc. On the Dana axle the drums are different as well. So I don't think its a simple job. All the Dana axles were 6 speeds (on the MK6) as well so will need to change pripshaft coupling etc.

As the previous person said....the drums are different on the 5.88 axle, when they reach there service limit you may need to sell a kidney to buy a new pair. :x

Hello there, I have no idea really! I don't know very much about diff ratios but all I was saying is the MK7 I drove was only 100ps and had a 5 speed box, and was very low geared as it was used for towing and cud fly along nicely with over 1.5 ton of woodchip on the back whilst towing an 850kg trailer. I didn't actually look at the tag on the diff so I can't confirm what ratio it was, (but I will ask for the details from Ford ETIS so we can establish the diff ratio it used). It was a truly awesome van to drive.

My MK6 is 120ps but I do wonder if the engine 'is tired' as I have cleaned out the inlet and blanked the EGR, new fuel filter and air filter, oil and oil filter and it hasn't made much of a difference in terms of performance, wonder if my timing is spot on or could it be that it is out by a tooth or 2 maybe?? I suspect a new fuel pump and or injectors might restore some performance. Thank you to both You and TPUK for explaining about the differences between the MK6 and MK7 axle differences as I assumed they were identical.

So is 5.13 the lowest ration available for my MK6 then ??

Alright dude. :)

Yeah....on your axle a 5.13 is the lowest they went.

I would guess a double cab tipper will be +2.6 tonne depending on the spec of the tipper, but a 120 shouldn't hang about unladen....if it feels as if it's at a snails pace I would guess there is more wrong with it than just fair wear & tear.

Do you know anything about it's history :?:
