Solid or dual mass flywheel for replacement?

Postby mattt429 » Mon Aug 21, 2017 5:30 pm

So for the last 12 months my clutch pedal has been bouncing around a good 'un if you rest your foot gently on it, and gears have become increasingly crunchy when cold

I've been saving for a new clutch/flywheel kit for some time knowing its inevitable.

Today the rest of it went, not sure if its just the release bearing or whatever but limped it home in 3rd :P

My question is what would you all recommend as far as the flywheel goes, I've heard solid mass flywheels have longer lifes, if you can accept the power delivery may not be as smooth (after all this is what the dual mass was designed for - until it breaks xD )

It's a mk6 '03 2.4 rwd 5 speed with the towing ratio axle, i'm assuming this is the original clutch and flywheel as i have no service history for the van whatsoever. If it is original, it's covered 120k miles so i don't think it's done too bad at all!

Clutch life is mainly controlled by driving style.

I'd fit the same as it currently has unless you know it's been converted, then I'd put it back to factory spec.
mk7 08reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD
mk6 X reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD - scrapped
mk4 J reg 2.5 L300 LWB MHR RWD - sold on

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

I've done a few clutches on these Vans including mrks 7 and they already had the solid fly wheel fitted from the factory

Mk7 2.2 up to 110 PS , SMF factory fitted , 115 PS upwards and 2.4 rwd dmf factory fitted I believe, I converted my mk7 2.4 rwd to SMF some 2 years ago due to dmf failure and my opinion is it runs better and smoother. NB make sure only quality kits are used such as lUK or Valeo.
Others will have a different opinion.
