Rattle on start up

Postby Wallboy » Wed Sep 20, 2017 5:27 pm

I have a 2004 MK6 Transit and mostly every time its cold and I try starting it, the engine turns over, rattles then stops. It usually always takes 2 attempts to start it which is very annoying and quite embarrassing. Once the engine has ran for as little as 5 seconds and I re-start it, it start perfect. I have tried turning the ignition on twice and waiting for the coils to heat up but this doesn't help.

I have replaced the starter motor and had the coils checked and they are getting power.

I did try getting a video of a failed start but just my luck it started first time, however you can hear its got a rattle while starting.

If it was a diesel I say it needs timing chain kit but you say coils in post you may have a Dohc petrol engine so not sure if thay get the same fault as the diesel both engines have hydraulic tappits so they me be getting weak especially if not had regular oil and filter changes I remember that the cvh engine was not kept on top of with oil changes the pickup filter in the sump and the tappits would clog up but they rattled all the time

It's a 2.4 Diesel and the head gasket was replaced 5000 miles ago so all fresh oil.

Sounds like timing chain sometimes you can getaway with the hyd tensioner and the blades that the chain run on when I did mine did chain and sprockets as well all gen Ford parts as mine is a camper I wanted it to last it had done 85000 mls and was only just a slight a rattle on startup I did mine to early but spending a lot of time and money converting it I wanted to last and have no problems

You mentioned you have a Mk6 2.4 diesel...!

Then you mentioned Coils..??? Diesel..?? I'm guessing you're talking about glow plugs..??

As Dumper mentions....Sounds like your timing chain is rattling...this can throw the timing out and cause erratic/failed starts. Best to get it sorted before it fails completely.
