oil level min to max difference?

Postby oOplumberOo » Sun Oct 08, 2017 3:32 pm

Hi guys , mk6 2.0di , does anyone know how much engine oil it takes to go from the min mark to the max mark? , And is it me or is it impossible to get accurate level readings from this dipstick ?? , i think i must of originally over filled it slightly when i changed the oil even though i took my time with it, cheers...

I'm going to say about a cup full.
The dip stick tube bends near the engine so more often than not you'll wipe the oil as you pull it out Lol i try and twist it so it is opposed doing this but i end up dip wipe dip several times :?

It will be ok if it is a couple of mm too high or too low from min and max on the dip but if it goes half way up the dipstick you really don't want that to happen  likewise not registering on the dip is a nono.

Park it on level ground and just keep dipping and wiping and if needed twisting until you are able to see.

(Euro 6 engines not included in the above statement due to the clever idiots at the engine plant clearly not having a scooby doo)

On my 2.2 I found it impossible to get a accurate oil level reading until I found the solution.
The dip stick is such a good seal to the tube when it is pulled up a vacuum pulls oil up and gives a false reading.
So now I pull the stick out, wipe it and only put it in until the O rings rests on the top of the tube.
That means you have to add about 15mm to the level since that is the amount of dip stick not pushed in.

It works for me!

Can't find my mk6 workshop manual right now, but this number is definitely in there near the front if anyone has one.

Looking at the haynes manual now and page 0-12 it states -

"Approximately 2.0 litres of oil will raise the level from the lower mark to the upper mark."

Doesn`t specify if its the same for 2.0l and 2.4l engines but the picture shown is a fwd Di.

on page 1-2 it gives the oil capacities for 2.0l (6.5l with filter, 6l without), 2.4l (7.0l with filter, 6.5 without) and it says 2.0l difference between max/min without differentiating between the two engines so it is the same for both.

This is unecessary because even if it did create a vacuum, the oil level in the tube would only rise by the same distance you have moved the dipstick and not alter the measurement.

Can`t say i have ever had a problem checking the oil on any car van or motorbike i have ever owned. A mate had problems with his old orion once though, saw him keep pouring more and more oil into it. Went over and the silly sausage hadnt been pushing the dipstick all the way in. Pushed it in and it was miles over max, he drained 3 or 4 liters out to get it right.

 I was thinking the same thing

If there's oil somewhere between min and max on the dipstick, then it's fine. If it's right down the bottom, then chuck half a litre in 8)

For the sake of completeness for anyone that reads this in the future, the 2.2l engine is 1.5l difference between min and max and it takes 6.2l with filter and 6.5l without. According to the haynes mk7 manual.

I`m sure the larger, upgraded sumps will catch someone out though, if they haven`t already.

Can't see it taking more oil without the filter....methinks you mean the other way round....

As the other chaps have mentioned....the dip stick is there for a reason..!
