Help with changing the differential (MK7 2.4, RWD)

Postby Kristianskaffe » Mon Oct 09, 2017 12:14 am

Hello boys,

As I´m hopefully getting my old MK7 back on track soon (viewtopic.php?f=27&t=177587&start=300) I´m willing to throw in some small upgrades as I hopefully can drive it at least 3,5 more years (1,5 until next MOT and then 2 years from there) (2.4 TDCI RWD)

I´m driving with way to many RPM and would like to lower it considerably. As I just fitted all new brakes to it, I would like just to change the differential. Is that something I can do myself in my mechanics garage? I have acces to it.
I have found thishttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-TRANSIT- ... SwnDZUJWCr and want to hear if that´s all I need. For sure I need to contact them and get the right one.

I can read, that many of you state that this has been covered many times, but I´m struggling to find any DIY-guides or anything in here or on the internet. Does any of you have a link or anything?
I´ve only managed to find this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Im7pq3_wpvE (there is 2 parts) and it seems somewhat like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-H0KQG5uOI - for sure they have a different approach.... I like to know what to be aware of... please adwise...

Any help will be highly appriciated!

Most people just replace the whole rear axle assy for the ratio they want. Sometimes it's cheaper to do that than buying a new crown-wheel & pinion.

The eBay add doesn't specify a ratio..do you know what ratio you're after..??

Hello Lord Knobrot

Thank you for your time :)
Yes, I know but there are a couple of things that make me think that crown and pinion could be a solution...
First of all I just had new brakes fitted and second, it's not easy to find a whole axle here in Denmark.

I was thinking to avoid having to pay tons of money for a courier, I could go for crown and pinion...
But as I said, any suggestions and comments are very much appreciated.

Ratio... Well, I seldom drive around with more that 500 kg., and normally it is around a couple of hundreds... Therefore I was considering 3.23 (or just around - ratio from memory) or 3.73. I drive mainly on motorways
It's a 140 bhp, and I was also thinking about having a chat with Vantuner... Just to be sure I don't run out of torque ;)

Thanks again!

Kristian

Oh and the eBay add, you can choose the ratio by calling them in advance.

I think they do a 3.31 & 3.53 for the 200ps 5 cyl...The 3.73 will suit the 140ps nicely, I think the 3.31 may be a tad tall for the 140ps.

I have a 4.27 in my 140 (remapped to 170) and feel I need a taller rear end...but it's a good all-rounder ratio, tows well too.

But yes, go for a crown-wheel & pinion for sure if a suitable ratio complete axle assy isn't available..!

Seeing a bit of YouTube it seems to be fairly easy if your favourite tool is a hammer... But it also seems that some of the guys are talking about everything has to fit so precisely, as one was to assemble a space shuttle.

Can it be done from watching Youtube and putting everything back in, as pulled out... or does it require special Transit tools and measurements...?

I'm afraid my brain can't find out if it is a simple job or if it really is something I can (will?) mess up completely... Don't want that now do we..

No two pinions and crown-wheels are the same, so they'll need to be fitted correctly with the correct side play/shims and bearing pre-load, then the tooth pattern on the pinon/crown-wheel must be set correctly....it's not just a "whack it together with new bits" type setup, it must be done correctly or you'll be doing it again.....and paying for it again..! You can easily destroy a new set of gears in no time if it's not done right.

I think maybe this is not a job for me... sad enough... I don´t think it have a happy ending, maybe lots of pulling the rods, but no happy ending... ;)
So I think I´m back to finding a whole axle... if it just wasn´t so darn big and heavy...

Well well.. My mechanic doesn't seem to be as scared as I am.. But he would like, if I could find out, if some else than the above set from eBay is needed.
If it doesn't fit completely, he says that a set of shims could come in handy and maybe something more?

So those of you who have done this or know how to, could you be so kind to help me.
If I buy this set from eBay, what else do I need.. or should buy... Even things that MAYBE will be needed is interesting, because ones we get started...I'd like to get finished as well :)

Have a great evening!

Cheers from London :)
