Starting problem

Postby Mikexx » Tue Oct 10, 2017 3:39 am

I've looked through a number of posts related to starting, of which there are many, but can't find one with the same symptoms, apologies if I my symptoms are covered in a recent post. Perhaps I'm not using the right keywords.

In essence my Transit required a modest amount of cranking where there is a hint of firing but insufficient grunt to make it to tickover.

This is most noticeable when cold but hot starting isn't instantaneous either, where the revs seem to pick in a lazy manner. If I let go of the starter its a toss-up whether it will tick-over or die.

There is little or no white smoke out the back even after modest churning sugesting a lack of fuel.

When its finally going, all seems well.

Any ideas or pointers?

Build Date: 04.02.2008
Vehicle Line: Transit (V347/348)
Version: Regular Cargo Van
Engine: Duratorq TDCI 2.4 (100PS)
Transmission: 5-Speed Manual - MT75

The fuel filter was recently changed and there was no noticeable change in behaviour.

I did think about air getting in, but given the behaviour is similar are stopping and starting, or starting from cold I dismissed the idea of an air leak (into the system).

Many thanks for the interest.

Firstly you need to get codes read...this will give a hint as to what might be wrong.

I'm still going for the duff PRV though..!

The fault codes are as per Forscan
P1103 - MAF Sensor in range but higher than expected (Presume due to EGR blanking plate)
P0704 - Clutch switch input circuit, probably due to the clutch problems outlined in an earlier post.

The following pics are of the FRP and FRP_DSD
The first s when the engine is revved hard twice, the others are starts. Sods law, when I'm trying to prove something it didn't churn for very long. Will have a another go when I have more time.

I have two more graphs of pressure, the first indicated a failed start, or should I say it was firing but without sufficient power to let go of the starter, the second did go after a much shorter churn.

Here it started:

Any ideas?
