Under body sealing

Postby x818 » Tue Oct 10, 2017 9:12 pm

I need to seal underneath of van as a preventative measure, never bothered with previous vans, both died of rust related causes!! I’m fairly handy so was planning on doing this myself. There is no welding needed at the moment, and brake pipes were done at last MOTFew bits of advice needed first:
1. What prep work do I need to do beforehand.
2. What underbody seal is best?
3. Is it worth getting someone to do it for me as I’m lazy
Any help or advice appreciated
Thankd

I was working not far from you this week up smellesmere port
Anyway I have to do mine soon so what I was going to do was, sand down any surface rust with a flap disc on my angle grinder then use underseal all over the under carriage and spray waxoyl into all the holes in the chassis sections, I was/am also thinking of stone chip the inner wings and rear wheel wells :D N

I don't bother with the m56 I tend to go redneck, past stanlow the up through frodsham, Avonlea and delemere forest back to stinky Winsford

I believe if you stick the tin of underseal into a bucket of warm water it makes application a lot easier. I have been looking at the rustoleum products recently. N

Was also considering spray application I’m in process of acquiring a compressor, too many ideas and too little action I thjnk

I need to get mine done ASAP as well. I was looking at using Dinitrol as I can get that from Rejel in Bedford. Dinitrol is supposed to set harder than waxoyl and does not need reappyling as often.

Dinitrol are based in Warrington, so it might be worth you guys getting it direct from them if you want to use it.

Someone I know told me to use Upol Raptor in the wheel arches - the pickup truck bed liner stuff.

Use the 2 part chemicals for underbody protection. After that is set and dried out you can use dinitrol for the cavities (only!). The crap gets EVERYWERE. I have a alfa 156 fully restored and protected by it top to bottom and it works but man is it a bitch to clean off were you need to remove it.

Yes, Upol Raptor is a truck bed liner. The guy who suggested it says it's amazing on wheel arches as it won't wash out and prevents stone chip damage. He said to just get a can and paint it on. And you can get it in different colours too. Upol is a common brand of pro auto paints so you should be able to get it fairly easily - I've seen Raptor for sale on ebay.

You can get kits direct from Dinitrol in Warrington with everything you need for different sized vehicles, in either Schutz gun or aerosol spray can versions. If you are local enough to collect it saves a hefty amount on postage.

By two part chemical, do you mean the rust converter stuff you use before the wax coating?

Warrington is close enough to me, I’ll price both options up as I’m only planning on keeping the van for 3-4 years so don’t mind reapplying underseal

I have used Dinatrol cavity wax inside the chassis, crossmembers and sills.
Mine was rusting under the factory stonechip so spent hours scraping it off first.
Used a Shultz gun with a long lance and blathered it. A very messy smelly job, but I am pleased with the results.

I’m thinking along the lines of a sanding disc on a 4 1/2 in grinder to remove the loose, then unsure wether to jet wash or just a good scrub and rinse underneath(don’t want to damage anything). Question is how do I get under properly with no ramps
