Smokin'

Postby Oldvandriver » Fri Oct 13, 2017 5:28 pm

Well, for the second time I've borrowed the old mk6 I may buy,and noticed this time that She's smoking like a b*stard !! and running a bit rough. So I've dumped some Wynns injector cleaner into the tank and run it for about an hour but that's all today. The smoke is grey/white and if I rev the engine to 3 thou plus when static the world disappears ! Oh I pulled a pretty foul air filter out of its hole too. What can I do to improve the situation do you think ?
She starts dead easy, there doesn't seem to be much smoke and derision when I pull off the oil filler cap, has a reputation for not using much oil or water, has been to Ireland three times this year (so obviously is reliable).but I can't go about laying a smokescreen ! I haven't had so much room on the road for years !!
Is there anything I can do about this ?
She is a SWB low roof,2.0L 85 T280 built 2005.

Sounds like a fueling issue, a good service and check the timing. N

There is an online manual.

Here is the diagnosis page for 2.0l.

I had to zoom in quite a bit to read the text :!:
mk7 08reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD
mk6 X reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD - scrapped
mk4 J reg 2.5 L300 LWB MHR RWD - sold on

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

do a full service (oil, filter and get a ORIGINAL TDCI fuel filter from ford!) and chuck in 0.5 litres of kerosine (ask a farmer or something) on a full tank and drive it empty in as few runs as possible with lots of highway use. report back.

I agree about the service, but you don't need a TDCi filter for a TDDi (85ps)

Is that some branded product or do you mean Kerosene.

What is it supposed to achieve. Diesel and kerosene are very similar hydrocarbons.
Diesel fuel normally has molecules with between 10 and 15 carbon molecules in it, while kerosene has between 6 and 16.
Diesel has a regulated maximum sulfur content but most kerosene these days is probably low sulfur as well.

missed that it was a DI.

just regular kerosene, the fuel, nothing special. injector cleaners are basically 97% kero with some glitter added to jack up the price 5000%. chucking in half a liter actually does something. diesel is really oily, kero basically works the same as terpentine.

To anyone who might be interested, This seems to have been caused by the timing chain slipping, causing the cam carrier to crack and make everything work .... Badly !! had it sorted with a second hand head & carrier, seems ok now (well as fine as a twelve year old motor usually is !)
