Airbox mods?

Postby gt_addict » Fri Oct 13, 2017 8:23 pm

Hi everyone,

So having a little check over the van and took the top section off the airbox to check for debris and how the filter is doing and noticed that the airflow has to perform two "U" turns before it gets to the engine. Has anyone cut out the two sections of pipe (one on the top half of the box ans pne on the bottom) to improve airflow?

The only reason I ask is on my old connect I removed the swan neck tube and it did improve responsiveness.

Cheers.

dont bother, the turbo will suck in all the air it needs. just make sure the filter is replaced on time. if you want to improve performance or driveabliity you should start by stopping the EGR from doing its job. a 0.001% increase in air intake is nothing compaired to the amount of exaust gases that the EGR put back into the intake.

If Martin has worked his magic on the van already then don't change it or you'll have wasted Martin's work.

I have one in mine, came with my Superchips remap...but since I had just replaced my normal paper filter I left it for ~6 months...after fitting the K&N it made absolutely Fark-all difference as far as I could tell..!

I wouldn't go out of my way to buy one though...genuine paper filter is fine.

Dont use them. Wet filters will kill the sensor in due time as the oil in them will burn into the sensor element. Use paper and replace it when it gets black.

From experience I can say that none of the aftermarket cleanable foam or cloth element filters last long enough to replace a paper element changed at proper intervals when you drive a vehicle under normal highway conditions.

EDIT: after Knobby's post
Sorry forgot a few words, got distracted - last long enough on a cost or performance basis to replace

I have a cone filter on mine for 2 reason,

1, it was free,
2, got fed up of the soggy filter in the rain due to the stupid air box not sealed good enough,

But mainly cos it was free and I'm a tight sod  . N

The 'in box' panel filters are a good idea, til the first time you come to clean it, then the cost and convenience of just popping another stock filter in, makes the initial K&N purchase price and hassle involved in cleaning and oiling it seem a bit worthless.

This is from someone who changes the filter on his dirtbike every day of riding ......
