Intermittent starting

Postby ndtransit » Sun Oct 15, 2017 8:04 pm

Hi all
I've got a 2010 transit sport 140 2.4
I pulled onto a petrol station forecourt and switched engine off.
The fuel level was very low but I didn't actually run out! When I filled the. Tank I got 74.5 litres in.
When I tried to restart it would fire for a split second but would not run.
My mechanic took the fuel filter off and put an injector cleaner in it and it fired straight away and drove fine.
After the engine had been running for an hour I turned it off and it would not start again.
I put the remainder of the injector cleaner in and it fired right up.
The next morning it started fine but then would not start later in the day.
My mechanic suspects a filter head is leaking air in.
But why did it start the next day.
Ps I had noticed a bit of rough running when cold for a few weeks before all this happened kind of like a miss fire but only very occasionally.
When the filter is taken off it does seem only half full.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Your mechanic chap is probably right....the filter heads are known to crack and leak air...also check all the upstream pipes and hose connections...and the injector leak-back pipes & "O" rings, they're also known to give grief..!

There should be no air in the fuel filter at any time . There must be an air leak somewhere .

Thanks for your replies!
We changed the suction valve and it seems to of sorted the starting issues. I only picked the van up this evening so hopefully she will start in the morning. Hopefully the misfire type stutter when cold will be gone too!
I will let you know
Thanks
