Electrical issue

Postby Eurotransit » Tue Oct 17, 2017 12:45 pm

Hi,

I'm faced with the following problem and hope you guys can help diagnose.

The transit starts and runs fine, but it's dead completely as soon as the key is removed. The interior lights are immediately dead, the radio presets reset, etc. It's like there is no continuous power. Yet insert key and ignition on etc and all comes to life and the car starts as well.

Car has one battery fitted currently, was usually a two battery setup, but the second (non starter) battery boiled and died. At first on one battery there were no issues, but a little while later the problems as described started appearing.

Is this a main (under bonnet) fuse? Is this a sticking or broken relay? Anyone got a clue?

Thanks in advance for any pointers.

REPLACE THE SECOND BATTERY !
Your van is set up for a 2 battery system , I'm supprised you've not had running and dash issues either
2nd battery does lights radio ecu locking when engine is switch off
Other battery is for starting only

+1

Batteries are not simply tandem, they both serve a different function on the van, one is the dedicated starter battery and one is the Aux system battery.

If you want a single battery system you need to bypass the battery saver relay.

Personally I'd fit 2 strong batteries as intended.

Bit silly really, like saying yes I'm a runner but chopped a leg off and now i seem to go round in circles

Sounds credible and almost humiliatingly simple. My mind must be skewed as to when the problem started... I thought it had worked correctly on one battery for a short while and as such had not made the connection.

The car will receive a new battery soon. Reason for not immediately replacing battery was twofold. Dealer upon sale of vehicle had described the second battery function as aux in the sense of me using it to on occassion power a coolbox/mini fridge and fan for the dogs. A power outlet was provided for these. Not as you stated for starting and vehicle aux functions. And the other is financial. A decent battery was an expenditure I could do without at the moment. So thinking I'd be ok on one battery for a while, I had postponed that a little.

My front batt died and I disconnected the front negative and bridged between the two positives. Worked fine for a couple of months but I also have a couple of donkey bats in the back for other things which are connected soon as ignition on.
As long as yr main bar is ok I'd reckon it's be ok for a while but there's a reason there's two under there
Especially coming into colder weather it's going to get harder.

A new battery has indeed cured the issues. Thanks!
