Fuel Guage - Mk7

Postby Eoinom » Thu Oct 19, 2017 10:28 pm

Picked up my new to me 2007 110 T300S today. Please bear in mind this is my first transit

First thing I noticed was there was 1/4 tank of fuel and dash said 150 mile range (it was on empty when I test drove it 2 days ago so I was happy) - The range kept falling quicker than the milage - but I presumed thats the computer getting used to my driving, but the needle did seem to be dropping quicky. After 60 miles I had the low fuel warning light on and with a range of 30 miles I tried to fill it.

I got about 18l in and the pump nozel started clicking and some fuel came out the overflow. Confused and worried about a leak I paid and got back and the gauges say I have 3/4 tank of fuel and almost 400 miles range.... The fuel guage and range matched up for for the last 20 miles, the needle has barely moved and the range seems to be matching the trip counter now.

The van has been parked up for the last 4 weeks. When I rang the guy I bought if from he said he only put 5l in it this morning.... Is the tank so small (ex-AA van), or is the guage faulty? Or did I do something stupid filling it like airlock it? Is there anything I should/can check?

I'm nervous about running out of fuel. Apart from that it drives brilliantly, and feels like a van 1/4 its age/milage

I put £50 in at a time and it goes up to just over half.
I normally do around 220 before topping up again.

Sounds like you have a faulty gauge or something.

thanks

Thats what I was thinking- maybe showing double thats in it... Now all I have to figure out is it showing too much, or too little... Is there any knack to filling them, or do they airlock easily? (pump clicking / overflow spilling out diesel - I struggled to put €20 in it - diesel was €1.23 / l)

I find that with mine, getting the nozzle in a slightly wrong position results in the fuel spurting back and shutting off the pump, so maybe you had it twisted slightly :?:
The miles to empty thing will get more accurate as you establish a steady average fuel consumption, based on your driving style

The more I think about it.. if the warning light was on... and he put £6 in it... there's no way I could've done 60 miles and have had 30 left unless there was more fuel in than the needle was showing.... fingers crossed - I'm an eternal optimist (I had to be - my last car was a renault)

Sorry if the currencies are confusing - I bought in Northern Ireland and brought it into the South.

Mine averages out at around 7 miles to the litre, 36mpg, so and 80 litre tank will give you around 560 miles to empty, or about 500 till the light comes on. I'm a bit paranoid about running out of fuel so I rarely see the low fuel light

I find with mine that the fuel gauge and "miles to empty" reading is pretty accurate until my fuel warning light comes on - then it starts to drops like a stone.

The first time I let my van get near empty I needed to drive to the next town and back, a roughly 25 mile round trip. Starting off the readout said something like 40 miles - (can't remember exactly). When I got back in the van it said something like 12 miles left, and by the time I had covered about 3 miles it was saying empty.

I had an extremely tense five mile drive to the only petrol station on route!

It seems more accurate now, but that episode taught me a lesson and I don't really trust it much below about 60 miles - which is about when the warning light comes on.
I try and fill up ASAP when I dip below 100 miles left.

Could this be a front battery fault.

Is that a possibility?

I started it today - turned it off and back on again about 5 minutes later - engine "coughed" into life and the gauge fell to 1/2 way and dropped from 360 miles to empty to 280. - I havn't driven it since Thursday (The Irish DVLA dont have a code for a 4 door so I have to wait until someone updates the computer before I can register it) - and it hadn't been started in 3 or 4 weeks before I bought it... though it did start first time.

I'm putting a second battery into it and maybe I should look at this sooner rather than later - I am considering the Ford Bypass Relay - has anyone any experience of this, or a part code/description???

Normally, if the front battery is dying, the c/locking doesn't work, and the speedo/tacho gauges flap around when you turn on the ignition key.

They do suffer from strange gremlins when the batteries are failing though

Does your van have two batteries under the driver seat or two.

It has just 1 -

I checked the fusebox in the hope of a split charge relay but none there.

The only other thing in the battery box is a Heavy Duty Battery red power cable with a big fuse on it coming from underneath thats disconnected - it may be for jump cable connectors at either end as this was an ex-aa van.
