85bhp versus 110bhp 2.2 TDCi engine

Postby Cider Andy » Sat Nov 04, 2017 7:17 pm

Despite extensive searching I've been unable to find out if the 85bhp and 110bhp engines are mechanically identical. Basically, I've a 110bhp van coming which was running fine but then put out white smoke and now won't start. That's as much as I know because the van hasn't arrived here yet.

Is that likely to be an injection problem? Or turbo, perhaps?

Worst case scenario would be to have to fit a spare 85bhp engine out of my old van. If I did, could I run it at 110bhp? Or would it be advisable to also install the 85bhp engine ECU?

85 and 110 are not the same engine

85 have none oil cooled pistons 110 does

but you convert the 85 ps engine by rebuilding it with oil cooled pistons

So for those of us that have remapped to 115bhp should we worry?

White smoke is normally a turbo.

Well, five weeks after paying for it, the van has finally arrived. With no battery....

First impressions of the engine are not good. The seller had told me it was driving fine then it poured out white smoke and wouldn't restart. The first thing I was going to do was check if the intercooler was full of oil which might indicate turbo failure, then possibly swap the injectors. Instead, I put a battery on it and cranked it over. Judging by how it sounds while cranking it has little or no compression on one cylinder, possibly two. So, rather than wasting time removing the cylinder head to check for piston damage I've decided to remove the 110bhp engine and replace it with a good 85bhp engine I have in my old van.

The new engine will be going in complete with all ancillaries and I'll also be fitting the PCM out of the same van. My question is will I need to do any reprogramming? Obviously the injector tolerances will already be set in the matching PCM but is there anything else I need to do? I'm thinking of things like the new van having aircon, unlike the old van, along with certain other creature comforts (which I don't think the PCM has a bearing on, but I don't know).

Is there anything else I could quickly check that might explain the uneven cranking prior to going for an engine transplant? Or any other advice.....?

I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work as you've described, but I'm no expert, as I've never done it. What I can tell you, is that features of your van, such as A/C E/W HFS, etc are controlled by the body control module (BCM), so are nothing to to with the PCM, which is purely for engine management 8)

Yeah, that's pretty much what I thought, with the exception of aircon. I updated the PCM firmware on my other van this week whilst trying [unsuccessfully] to remove the speed limiter (that's another story!). Whilst I was doing it, it asked if the van has aircon, presumably as it has an effect on engine idle whilst the aircon compressor is running?

Correct...with the aircon on, the idle rpm is raised slightly to take the extra load and the aux/condensor fan is activated whilst the aircon is on.

Thanks gents, as always.

I know the gearbox will come out with the engine in-situ but can the engine be removed without the gearbox (Mk7 FWD)?
